Hannah Mouncey wants to join the Australian Football League (this is basically rugby) Women's division.
"Mouncey played the final three games in the ruck for Ainslie and kicked 15 goals, with Canberra officials ruling she was not a safety concern."

this despite the fact
"one [female] player broke her leg in a tangle of legs with Mouncey."

Mouncey says:
“I am female like 50 per cent of the population. I may have been born a bit different but there was a real sense of normality when I transitioned,” she said.

The average MALE AFL player is 188cm and 88kg, so Hannah is both taller and heavier, and if admitted will both the tallest and heaviest player in the entire league.

Hannah was previously on the Australian MALE Olympic handball team as Callum Mouncey.

So - 6'4", 220lbs i.e. 15st 10lbs...

Yup, that's totally fair. Can't see why anyone's worried Hmm

That poor, poor woman who had her leg broken.

Not a safety concern?! Are they high?

Broke someone's leg! Surely he won't be allowed to play with women

I'd guess there would be a fair few missed tackles if playing against Mouncey, as I'd rather do that than risk serious injury. As a result whichever team plays Mouncey will no doubt experience a sudden uprise in form.

There's a reasonable summary here (some bad language etc):

And born a bit different??? FFS, this is what makes me so angry. The complete fucking denial of basic biology.

"Broke someone's leg! Surely he won't be allowed to play with women"

It was a woman's leg. He's already allowed to play against women in the amateur game. The only question up for grabs is apparently whether he should be allowed to play against women as a professional.

pisacake · 13/10/2017 16:10

I don't think there is much doubt that he will be allowed to play.

Whatever you think about what sex she should be playing with, I always think the reports of a broke leg are disingenuous. People break bones in sport all of the type against their own sex.

Same with the fallon fox stuff, yes she beat her opponent to a pulp but isn’t that point of MMA. It happens all the time in same sex sport.

He nearly played for the women's handball team but they said

(a) he's not within the 12 month (yes, that's all it takes to overcome 25 years of being a bloke) transition period by a matter of weeks
(b) they could bend the rules but they wouldn't be insured and besides which he's ridiculously huge and it would not be safe

So essentially it's not safe but they would have to ignore that IF he complied with the simple 12 month transition period, but as it was it was 11 months so they were able to tell him to get lost.

I'm 184cm, 116kg, size 10 feet.

I'm a woman.

Should I not be allowed to play on a womans team based on my size?

This kind of thing makes me so fucking angry. How this person chooses to dress and present themselves to the world is one thing and if he wants to dress and live as a woman - fine - but he should not be able to play women's sport. It's not fair on anyone. He will injure the other players and his side will have a massively unfair advantage in having a huge great bloke on their team.

You should be allowed to play on a woman's team if you are a woman. That is not particularly complicated.

The fact is he is not a woman, so the discussion of his size and strength and weight, which are merely average for male elite athletes, but 1 in a billion for female athletes, are pertinent.

Out of interest, Mide, Wildfire, have you ever played a contact sport against blokes? I have. Only football, not rugby. And only with mates who were not going in hard deliberately. But even so I've had accidental knocks from blokes the size of the man described here. I went flying. There is no comparison to the physicality of even a larger-than-average stronger-than-average woman. It isn't even in the same ball park.

It's completely unfair for the opposing team. I guess the team he wants to join are more relaxed about it as they will have the advantage.

Really it's up to women in sports to speak out about these kind of things. I can't really understand why more women are not doing it. I suppose it's similar to why all the actresses did not speak out about the sex abuse that was happening in Hollywood. They all hated the fact that it was happening but felt it would damage their careers if they spoke out about it.

What he said when wanting to ignore the qualification rules to play women's handball:

"In six months I’ll still be 6ft 2in and big and nothing will have changed. Anyone who thinks I have an unfair advantage is wrong, being tall means I have extra weight to carry and can’t run as fast as the girls."

LOL wot? Does he realise that Usain Bolt is 1.94m and 94kg? And that men are MUCH faster at sprinting than women?

I am a ciswoman, as it happens. Just a very big one.

I take your point, Prickly, that the build of a man and woman are not the same, even if they are the same size. However, the point in the OP was about her size. Where would you draw the line? Would a short, petite, trans-woman be allowed on the team? Should there be an upper size limit on cis-women participants? What about trans-women who transitioned as teens so have a typically 'female' build? Should they play on mens teams?

It just isn't as straightforward that.

I think I could take my chances against most women. Not against even a smaller or lighter man so a tall heavy one would floor me. Literally.
