Jeremy Corbyn speaks about trans rights

Haven't posted on this board before but I do read it often - sorry if I get the link wrong.

www.theguardian.com/society/2017/jul/19/let-trans-people-self-identify-gender-corbyn-urges-may

So do we need to remind Jeremy Corbyn that while supporting all minorities is important, it should NOT be bought at the price of women's rights being eroded and women's funding being cut and women's spaces being invaded?

A while back, I wrote to my MP about that private members' bill changing 'sex' to 'gender' as a protected characteristic, but he didn't reply (third time! useless!) - what is happening with that?

I am going to write again to my MP and maybe Corbyn too.

What do people think? I don't dislike Corbyn at all, And I honestly do wonder if it is a bit of trans rights being much more fashionable than women's rights!

(Please note I do not want to offend anyone, I just am worried about the rights of women and girls in our society today.)

Self identification is a huge problem for women. If anyone can say 'I'm a woman' and receive legal protection on that basis, it contradicts our protection and rights.

QueenLaBeefah · 19/07/2017 11:07

We're being thrown under a bus.

Collidascope · 19/07/2017 11:10

There's no debate, is there? Just "people not being able to self-identify as their chosen gender is wrong." Oh, okay... Thought there might be a bit more to it than that but I stand corrected.
Have any politicians actually put forward arguments as to why being able to self-identify might not be a great solution, particularly for women?

This is turning me into most raging, radical feminist ever.

Not only the arrogant disregard of women's rights. But the sheer lack of knowledge about the issue.

You are going to publicly announce your viewpoint, at least make sure you're informed.

At least have the vaguest concept of the damaging implications of self identification.

Who is he trying to attract with this? It can't be the trans-lobby, it's minuscule. It has to be because he thinks it's right on and progressive. He has to think that the whole LGB community will be behind him.

The fact that it will damage the rights, if not completely erode them, of 50% of the population has passed him by.

Elendon · 19/07/2017 11:27

From the article linked above.

Speaking at a reception on Tuesday night to mark the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales, the Labour leader said the struggle goes on for LGBT rights but there must be a particular effort to advance trans rights.

Can someone please explain to me what has gender got to do with sexuality? For me all this posturing simply cements heterosexuality as the default and for gender, not biological sex, to be binary.

It's no better than saying that humans walked with dinosaurs.

BigDeskBob · 19/07/2017 11:28

The title should be 'Corbyn urges may to abolish women only spaces'. Corbyn obviously doesn't think that men need to justify why they want to be be in women toilets, changing rooms, hospital wards, prisons ...

IamNotDarling · 19/07/2017 11:34

I'm massively fucked off about this. Yeah so right on, so fucking progressive Jeremy.

I'm off to write to my MP and hope that he sees sense. Women's right matter. Women's lives matter and letting men trample all over women's only spaces is a fucking travesty. Fuck you Jeremy Corbyn. Fuck you!!!!

MacaroonMama · 19/07/2017 11:53

I am glad it's not just me! I feel really let-down by him. Definitely going to write. I don't get how he can't see that this is a really bad thing for women and girls!

Yes Datun I agree that it is to enhance his image of being right-on and progressive.

Is anyone on twitter? Makes me want to join, just to ask him a few quick questions, see what he says.

Thanks so much Collidascope for posting a proper link to the article. I guess copy and paste doesn't cut it...

I've made him a handy guide

Jeremy Corbyn speaks about trans rights
sticklebrix · 19/07/2017 12:02

I'm so upset about this and will be writing to Corbyn too (for what good that will bring). They really don't care about women, do they?

Datun · 19/07/2017 12:07

The legal definition of the word woman is should be based on the biological definition.

If you remove the biological definition, it removes biological based protection.

I'm not on Twitter. If anyone can say this it would be great:

"You clearly don't think that self identification will erase the rights of women? 50 percent of your constituents?"

"What is the legal definition of the word woman?"

Bejazzled · 19/07/2017 12:09

He will attach himself to any bandwagon at the moment.

Lottapianos · 19/07/2017 12:11

Great post IAmNotDarling. I'm disgusted by this from Corbyn, but maybe not hugely surprised. The feminist women MPs in his party seem less than impressed by him and his lack of support for them when they experience threats on social media.

Datun · 19/07/2017 12:12

IamNotDarling

Like you, it makes me absolutely raging. Last night I spoke to a man about it and he said why are you so angry, this isn't going to affect anyone.

I can't tell if you're agreeing or not, by linking that thread?

nauticant · 19/07/2017 12:19

Who is he trying to attract with this?

What do you think the cross-over is between Momentum and SJW types? My reckon would be "considerable".

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 19/07/2017 12:27

FFS

Yes I'm, with you Datun; I also have become rabid on this issue. Between that and the Scottish Government issuing a consultation about changing toilets in schools to gender neutral, I am on the war path with this, and, if any politicians are reading:
This is s deal breaker and I will not for vote for any party that supports this shit! Women are HALF the population and we are getting pissed off

I am going to write in response to the Scottish government consultation. Any Scottish MNs who are going to write?

Lottapianos · 19/07/2017 12:31

'This is s deal breaker and I will not for vote for any party that supports this shit! Women are HALF the population and we are getting pissed off'

Very much seconded

I am horrified by this collective madness. FFs is it not obvious to anyone with their head screwed on that biology is not based on 'the feels'??!

Collidascope · 19/07/2017 12:33

No prob, Macaroon. You have to put these round the link but without spaces.
I notice they haven't allowed comments at the bottom of this article. Just to stifle debate that bit more.

Collidascope · 19/07/2017 12:37

I'm being flippant but I do love the idea of oldest daughters in the gentry suddenly deciding that they are male and whipping the family pile and title away from the younger son who had assumed that they were his.

No it seems the powers that be already thought of this and ensured it could not happen. Funny that.

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 19/07/2017 12:40

Except they can't - that's been explicitly excluded from the laws around this.

Collidascope · 19/07/2017 12:41

Assigned, what?? How on earth have they legislated for that?
