Are underwires good for us?

Hi all!

I am interested in finding out your views about non wired bras and about underwires? I have large breasts and am dissapointed that there are not more options for women to wear bras without wires who are D cup +. If there was a comfortable, but stylish, alternative to underwired bras for D+ women would you buy them?

I've spent a fair bit of my time wearing nursing bras without underwires, and whilst they're comfortable they're not as supportive as they could be. If I could swap 'stylish' to 'well engineered and supportive' then perhaps,.

Although personally I'm not sure what it is about underwires that's the problem, they do the job, they shouldn't stick in if your bra fits..

No-one's going on about soft-shell glasses, and I find glasses a lot more uncomfortable than bras for instance.

As above....I don't find underwired bras uncomfortable at all. I even sleep in mine.

TBH I would find it more uncomfortable without wiring especially if I had to run for the train because I'm a 38H.

I might be wrong but I think there is a category of things that's labelled "WOMEN: YOUR VANITY WILL BE YOUR UNDOING!" and underwired bras fall into this along with dying hair in pregnancy, plucking facial hair because two will grow back, and I'm sure lots of others I can't think of right now.

Sleep in my wired too. It was one of the best post-childbirth moments when I got out of nursing bras and back into wire. I am currently wearing an HH cup and non-wire just don't cut it in the support stakes.

There are a lot of threads about bras and bra fitting, but they they are usual in the 'Style and Beauty' section, and are often found under the title of 'bra intervention'

Well fitting under wires are comfortable. But the regular bra intervention posters know so many of the makes and styles on the market that they can recommend the non-wired ones if that's someone's preference.

Can I suggest you start a thread there for both fitting advice and the non-wired styles available in your size?

OOh - I'll tell you one situation where you don't want to be wearing an underwire - CAVING - I went once (and only once), and nearly got wedged in a tight spot when my underwire caught (somehow). When I was getting undressed afterwards I found the middle bits bent forward at 45 degrees!

I will also say (similarly as an HH wearer) that there are some brands who are definitely skimping on their underwires these days.. I have a couple, where they're just not up to the job, and stretch and twist in ways they shouldn't for the structural integrity of the bra.
