Woman in a men's prison

Yesterday, I stumbled on this piece of news:

nypost.com/2017/01/17/dangerous-ice-cream-killer-being-moved-to-mens-prison/

So, this time we have a woman being transferred to a men's prison. The reason is not because she decided to change sex, but because she is considered to be too dangerous to be with the other women.
Apart from the probably dubious taste in which the article is written, with expressions like 'watch out guys' or 'plenty of new men to choose', it summarises her crimes, and so on. The article also says that 'Thirteen additional female inmates will be transferred there in the near future', but it doesn't specify if it is due to the same reason or any other.

Personally, I can't understand very well this decision. Perhaps it would be better to put particularly dangerous female prisoners in a special section of a female prison. In a male's prison, it's pretty obvious how vulnerable she will be. It's not that I am very worried about her, I think she deserves severe punishment for her crimes, but I also believe the system should avoid dangerous situation between prisoners.

I would imagine it's a pragmatic decision based on a lack of facilities in women's prisons. There are going to be fewer women's prisons and fewer extremely violent and dangerous women, so there will be much less need for facilities for them. The prison she's being transferred to sounds more like a secure psychiatric unit, like Broadmoor, than a normal prison.

The prison is due to become a mixed facility (although with sexes remaining segregated) as there is currently no suitably secure prison for these types of female prisoners. This woman is being moved early because of the nature of the risk she poses but will be joined by other similar women later on. At no point will this women be expected to mix with male prisoners, though the article obviously tries to give that impression...
