Internet Misogyny

I was banned on the Guardian because Taliban supporters didn't like me sticking up for women.
I was banned on the Telegraph because Opus Dei (or hardline Catholics) didn't like me sticking up for women.
I lasted about a week on Breitbart but cracked when a neo Nazi called a famous black actress a see you en tea.
They really banned me for sticking up for women having evidence based medical care.

My daughter says "just ignore it all" but the trouble is in the US at least they are doing things to women under law which ISIS would find normal .
I really worry that the hard won liberties won decades ago will be lost to our daughters.
They think it is status quo but actually women being fully human is constantly under attack.

My posts are being premodded on the Guardian site for expressing feminist views. I have been banned by several feminist sites for the same reason. My posts stand on the New York Times but I've been banned from a couple of other news sites. Speaking up for women is transphobic in many circles now.

I've been banned from some news sites and had comments deleted from others, including the guardian. I'm careful in how I word what I say and try and stick to what is factual and true, but that just isn't welcomed in some places. It's looking a bit double-plus ungood.

One can get banned for linking to the most up to date facts and research.
Hardline misogynists don't like doctors medical bodies or even the WHO.

Western civilization is based on reason and reason needs to be defended.
Difficult to know how when media outlets are politically aligned and like to be sensationalist to sell their wares.
The other problem is media proprietors set their editorial policy according to personal preference not journalistic standards.

The comment sections seem to be an absolute hive of steaming misogyny and very very angry shouty men. It's incredibly hostile to women in general and especially to anyone who does not agree that women are basically the cause of all harm on the planet and at the same time not very important.

The ignore it thing is true BUT then there is no balance is there, it becomes normal the the internet is full of grotesque commentary. I know what I feel - that's fine - but the kids - they will read this stuff and think that is the predominant way that people feel and internalise it all etc. I don't want my young daughters reading reams about why it's a woman's / girl's own fault if she is raped and she's probably immoral in some way and it's natural for men to do this and really it should be legal to have sex with younger girls etc and so on. And this is what they will find on mainstream websites before you even get into the stuff that is setting out to be hateful.

Same goes for racism etc.

Comments sections are full of out and out sociopathic bastards.

There would be balance if journalistic standards were required in some way. Its funny (sad) when outlets banging on about free speech ban women who are attacked and not the attackers.
One way I suppose would be to demand that mods look more carefully at flags.
I think they get fed up and ban victims of abuse because its easier to do that.
But that doesn't allow freedom of speech or any balance at all.

The Internet is not a space where women have much of say. Daughter says it doesn't matter but a climate of opinion ends up making laws.
Someone on Breitbart told me earnestly that women were guilty if they had a miscarriage. Some US states have put that into law in various ways.

Yes it is a huge worry.

Massive pushback on the gains we have made over the last few decides from conservative " traditional" types, religious types, and of course all teh men (and some women) who believe that women should be subordinate to men (from literal slavery all the way through to "respecting" the head of the household / random men who approach women on the street etc etc)

I got pre-modded on the Graun the one and only time I got into a stoush. Previously, I'd reported heaps of past misogynist posts that were allowed to stay. This wasn't even amout trans. I walked away and refuse to support them now.

I'm in a state of growing horror lately due to the level of misogyny that has become normalised now. I've grown up on the internet, and it's very noticeably got a hell of a lot worse during the last year or so. Honestly don't know what to do - say anything to balance the mood and you get shouted down by people who have only the thinnest veneer covering their visceral rage and hatred towards what they perceive as a threat.

Western civilization is based on reason and reason needs to be defended.

Language control is thought control, and thought control is repugnant to reason.

So what do you make of the Mumsnet talk 'guidelines' where certain ideas are banned as deemed offensive?

The abuse on the internet has definitely gotten worse over the last year. Plus so many more MRA's and men who have sympathy for them and even women all who have swallowed a whole heap of shit about feminism. But even on ordinary TV and music channels the crap being put out their for the younger generation has become poisonous. I have no idea how I'm supposed to counter all this pornographic women hating crap as a mum. Or worse, soft porn dressed up as 'empowerment' with daft entitled women making it worse for all of us. Its depressing. Expect to be abused if you identify as a feminist on the internet. This is one of the last safe places.
