No, misogyny doesn't exist. Feminism is stupid and unneeded /end sarcasm.

Ffs. Sorry, OP, I got nothing except bitter cynicism.

It does suck though and I think the woman in question was pretty brave to report rape at all regardless of what country she was in.

I just read the headline out to DH, he didn't believe me. It just sounds so unbelievable.

Although we're not exactly a model country for believing victims, I had no idea that it could be switched around like that.

Dubai is and always has been a very male orientated country

One of the reasons I will never visit

Women are property there

I would never visit either.

I can't understand why a country with such a shit human rights record is promoted here as such a popular holiday destination. That poor woman, what an absolute nightmare.

This is one of the situations where I feel tempted to victim-blame. I mean, really, how did she expect to get a rapist arrested in Dubai?

Of course, I do blame the government. But since fighting against governments is hard and has little likelihood of success, I just wish British women (and all other women who don't have to live there) were sensible and wouldn't go to Dubai for holidays.

virgin you know the men who raped her are British?

I'm with Vestal on this. Of all the places one can go on holiday to why choose this one?

How awful for her. Their laws are utterly fucked.

Dp has a couple of family members living out there for work. Expensive flights aside I don't think we'll be visiting any time soon.

It doesn't matter why she chose to go to Dubai. Fucked up laws or not It doesn't mean she somehow deserves what is happening to her.

This has happened before.

I saw it on Facebook and thought someone was linking to an old article.

PilkoPumpPants I didn't know that, no, but even so, this doesn't change the fact that the government chose to have her arrested for reporting a rape. And that this is very much exactly what one can expect from Dubai.

Rapists will rape, and chances are you can't prevent them from doing so. What you can do, however, is stay in countries where there is at least some lip service paid to women's human rights, and the authorities will at least pretend to persecute rape. (I do not have a high opinion of Germany or the UK, let alone the US regarding this, but none of these arrest women for having been raped; they at least have the decency to accuse the women of "false rape accusation" before doing so.)

I have to admit the first thing I thought was, why was she so stupid to report it - we all know what happens down there. And before you have a go at me, unless she wants to be a martyr, and fight for women's rights down there, reporting it was never going to end well for her or have any point.

Report
libprog · 18/11/2016 10:37

clarification, maybe stupid was the wrong word, rather ignorant.

Report
scallopsrgreat · 18/11/2016 10:57

Hmm

Yeah what can she expect, stupid woman.

Jeez empathy bypass with some of you.

The woman has done nothing wrong and yet people still find ways to blame her.

Report
libprog · 18/11/2016 15:19

But that is the point - according to their laws, she has done something wrong.

Does rape not exist as a crime in Dubai then?

Report

I think the problem being the way Dubai is sold as some lavish holiday place. That lots of people have no idea of the culture and laws there.

Report
libprog · 18/11/2016 16:12

Yes, but extra-marital sex is also a crime. Quite the conundrum.

Yes. As said, my immediate instinct is to blame the woman for being so stupid, but being ignorant is not a crime, it is not even a moral failing (well, unless you vote for Trump, then maybe), so it is really unfair to blame her.

Those who market Dubai as lavish holiday place should be forced to put a warning on it, similar to the warnings on cigarette packages - "Contains loads of misogyny. May cause PTSD, imprisonment and death"

And perhaps the picture of an imprisoned woman instead of the photo of a fancy hotel pool.

And differences in laws and travel safety should be covered in school, with an emphasis on knowing local laws and differences between laws here and in these terrible places...

ChoccyJules · 18/11/2016 16:58

That makes me feel physically sick. Fucking morons.

Report
JenLindleyShitMom · 18/11/2016 17:02

I don't understand the logic behind this law. If she has reported a rape surely the police understand that this was not her choosing to have extra marital sex? Or do they not acknowledge rape in Dubai?
