I just heard a scottish MP wants to legalise prostitution! how can I stop this? legalised prostitution can not be good for the safety of those poor women Sad

Look into the Nordic model. Under this model prostitutes are decriminalised but punters, pimps etc are criminalised. On my phone so can't post links, sorry.

If you're in Scotland, write to your MP, let them know how you feel.

Are you sure you mean MP, and not MSP? There's been a consultation ongoing for a while, but it's not at the stage of changing the law yet.

If it's Jean Urquhart's consultation, it's looking at decriminalising prostitution, not legalising it. She was going to retire from Parliament this year, but is now standing as a RISE list candidate (which is pretty much the same as retiring....) so it may not progress any further anyway.

Chill, OP.

Still worth writing to your mp/msp to make your opinion known and gain clarification OP.

This was the consultation document, but the deadline for submissions has passed.

Yes, you can still write to your MSP, your MP has no say in this matter.

Surely decriminalisation of prostitution is a good thing?

Report
PalmerViolet · 28/02/2016 14:10

It certainly is for the men who like to use women in this way, yes Pottering. Not quite so good for the women though.

I support decrim, but it's not a popular notion round these parts.

There has already been a thread on this. The consultation has closed.

I can't find out where it has got to and Jean Urquhart's web-site seems to lead to only dead links.

I hope, given there are elections for Holyrood coming up, Urquhart is an independent and is standing down, the EU referendum that this will languish in a filing cabinet never to be seen again.

May I ask OP, how did this come to your attention now?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 28/02/2016 14:34

Sorry Hirples I thought she was retiring.

Report
PotteringAlong · 28/02/2016 14:47

But they're not decriminalising curb crawling etc. Surely it will just make it safer?

Report
HirplesWithHaggis · 28/02/2016 14:58

Yes, Lass, she had planned to retire, but is now standing as RISE candidate for Highlands and Islands (her usual area) on the lists. She might get in on the strength of her own personal polularity, she's been a hard working and honest MSP, but I'm not sure RISE are in with much of a shout, especially given the fracturing and backstabbing that's already going on there.

But that's a different story, apols for the derail.

OP and PotteringAlong

This is the thread about it. This may explain what is being proposed.

Thanks Hirples I have to admit I had not even heard of RISE (as a slightly to the left of centre unionist I'm not really their core target ! )

www.scottish.parliament.uk/S4_Bills/Human%20Trafficking%20Bill/SPBill57B4S042015.pdf

This is the new Human Trafficking (Scotland) Bill, which mentions (page six, section 3:3) trafficking for the purposes of prostitution.

Report
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 28/02/2016 15:44

The "aiding and abetting prostitution" is likely to be incompatible with Jean Urquhart's proposals for legalised brothels without a specific exemption for legal brothels.

As drafted 3.3 would catch even a landlord either explicitly or tacitly allowing a flat to be used as a brothel.

Yes, it's a bit wooly, imho. That's the final version btw, it's already received Royal Assent and is due to be rubber-stamped very soon, before the end of this Parliament.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 28/02/2016 16:14

There's so much coming out of the Scottish Parliament that Bill didn't come across my horizon. If it about to be enacted then I see little chance of Jean Urquhart's proposals succeeding.

On a side note I'm a wee bit puzzled at the point of this thread. Another new poster with no track record making one single post and not coming back.

And so incredibly misinformed...

However, it's been nice chatting. :)
