the relaunch/anniversary special of TGIF is a manfest, though I'm sure they will squeeze a woman in a bikini in at some point:

On the London Marathon 2015 runners medal there are 2 runners depicted - both men. It's like women don't run marathons, raise millions for charity while doing so and who the heck is Paula Radcliffe?:

These examples are just 2 I've come across in normal daily life in the last week.

Grrrrr!

Sorry but is who the heck is Paula Radcliffe? sarcastic?

yes sarcastic - it's like she never existed. Women are invisible on the London Marathon Medal. Why? If you are depicting 2 runners on a medal to give to all the competitors in a massive sporting event, why wouldn't one of those runners be a woman?

it's like she never existed

She did a wee in public like men do and I think since then she's been roundly ignored. Just a personal observation, I'm no sport journo.

I agree with you about the medal thing but why should there be a woman on TFI Friday? If the programme to celebrate that era, then what's more 90's than blur and oasis?

Sleeper? Elastica? Courtney Love?

Err....I am not an expert on 1990s culture by any means but I spent about 10 seconds thinking about this before The Spice Girls sprang to mind.

Banknotes. As of next year there'll be no women of achievement on the UK banknotes.

Gilbert yeah true but they were exactly mainstream at the time were they? To be honest I wasn't very old at the time and I can't remember what I did yesterday.

Rosa- sorry I meant "britpop" not 90's in general

Lots of female artists of that time with their own bands Shirley Mason Garbage Justine Freshman Elastica Louise Wener Sleeper Cerys Mathews Catatonia

YonicScrewdriver · 02/06/2015 19:02

Yes, they were, Mide.

Mide7 · 02/06/2015 19:04

Ok ok I was wrong! Grin

I still think if you had to pick some britpop artists most people would pick oasis, blur and pulp over the bands mentioned above. Even tho the bands mentioned above were brilliant!

Cycling - Tour de France/ Grand Depart/Tour of Yorkshire.

Why, just why?!

Don't say that the women can't cover the distances, that's just not true.

Don't say that they had that sprint competition in York or somewhere, as if that was the same thing.

Someone should challenge the ICC. I don't even like cycling, yet it enrages me; not like it would be difficult to include women/ run two races on same course.

Paula Radcliffe did a poo in public not a wee, though I suppose she probably did both.

Lotsgoingon there is a woman's tour of France isn't there?

Definitely a female tour of Britain

Report
lotsgoingon · 02/06/2015 19:50

is there? Never noticed. That's my point, really. TDY was a really big thing, round here, but it's an exclusively male race, when surely it doesn't need to be?

I guess it is because Chris Evans is that kind of guy! Still we are 20 years on - come on!! From the press releases for the show it's like women just didn't exist in the 90's.

As for Paula Radcliffe she is an amazing athlete. And I am full of admiration for anyone who can finish the London marathon. So why only men on the medals?

This isn't a case of no women at all, but DD got Guess Who out the other day. I haven't played it for about 26 years and instantly remembered that there were about 20 men and about 5 women. I assumed times have changed - eight women this time, I think. Wtaf is that about - as if men are default and women 'other'. Really pissed me off

Mide7, I know you've acknowledged that the Spice Girls were also big in 90s, but I thought it was worth mentioning that the record sales of the Spice Girls are reported to be larger than the combined sales of Blur and Oasis.

Wobblystraddle - you're right. It's the presentation of half the population as a minority. This pisses me off too.

Why are there so few Jews and Muslims in parliament? It's time we demanded quotas and affirmative action so Jews and Muslims can have as many seats in parliament as Christians.

Report
WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 03/06/2015 11:46

How many Jewish and Muslim people are there in parliament, and how does this compare to the % in the population?

I would agree that the makeup of our parliament should reflect our society, in terms of sex, sexuality, religion (and none!), disability and so on and so forth. I mean you're never going to get it exact but at the moment it is way off.

Representation seems to be more representative of the people at local level maybe. There are lots of female / non white etc council members around here. It seems to drop off the higher up the "food chain" you go.
