I have an essay due in on wed Hmm

Ridiculous week, with kids sick, me sick and a broken down car. Basically meaning i've not even started it Blush

Its only 2500 words, 'In what ways could we consider the content of mass media to be ideological in nature'

So I have a vague idea of using Mulvey and the male gaze...and thats it. I could really really really do with some other ideas, maybe a criticism of Mulvey, some more thinkers on media and gender inequality.

Alternatively a link to an essay writing website would be handy...Tutors I jest if you are reading this!

Not structured at all! Free writing really, but usually I would have done the reading so make up a loose structure as I go along.

Intro (general intro to mass media, ideology, where i'm going to focus (feminism, male gaze, gender inequality in the media)

Paragraph on the male gaze - what Mulvey says it is

Paragraph on examples where it can be found, how this shows that media is ideological

THEN NOTHING Confused

I could be completely off the mark but it really interests me that most media companies are owned by men, run by men and populated by male staff - how can they possibly represent female povs properly, effectively and fairly?

Had a quick google, and there are probably better sources than this, but here is an article which looks at stats to support what I said: theopedproject.wordpress.com/2012/05/28/the-byline-survey-2011

Good luck! At least it is not 10pm the night before it is due which is when I started most of my uni essays Wink

And there was a great photo doing the rounds on Twitter last week comparing the types of women shown in The Sun - the women were all busty model types I think. I think it was done by NoMorePage3 I think.

Comparing a photo of men (serious/sport stars etc) to photos of women (models, reality stars etc)

Guardian top 100 media list out this morning. Mostly men. The "no more page 3" woman's on it, and Justine from MN.

A few female editors, but, you know, mostly men.

Gotta be a heap of mileage in that. www.theguardian.com/media/ng-interactive/2014/dec/08/mediaguardian-100-2014-interactive-guide

You could do a contrast between print media and social media that doesn't need to get the attention of the white middle class man, what did Grayson Perry call them, the Ubiquitous Man? So, the reach of the #Ibelieveher, the #everydaysexism, the "#deadwomencounting and the awareness of violent crimes against women which were not reported in the mainstream media until angry, and unedited, women were able to use SoMe (Steubenville, the woman raped and murdered on a bus in India, the two young sisters raped and hung in India, Ched Evans, Campus sexism, Mary Beard and Criado Perez abuse on twitter)

You can totally do this.

Cup of coffee and a plan, you'll be fine.

Good luck.

That Guardian list is timely but depressing - I would count the number of women on it, Pantone and then take out the ones who are stars - Kim Kardashian/Sheridan Smith/Taylor Swift etc and work out how many women are left. I am sure there are more senior women at Sky/BBC/in print journalism that could have been featured.

The Guardian list is odd. Although it's deeply amusing to me that that awful twat Piers Morgan is oozing out the bottom of it. With any luck he'll not even get a mention next year, because he's an evolutionary dead end and a social irrelevance.

Anyway, good luck with the essay, all my best work was done in less than 48 hours. I might have to get more organised next year Grin

Only on 800 words, but just got kids to bed so starting again in a min.

That's a fab bit of research, will fit nicely with my 'who's producing the media' section.

Totally making this up as I go along Confused

Would this be at all helpful? Re: gender bias in who is recognized as the new leaders of "journo-entrepreneurs"? www.vanityfair.com/business/2014/10/media-industry-disrupters rebutted by the-toast.net/2014/09/10/a-list-of-people/
