Hats off to this man

I've just read about this in The Times, which is subscription only, but here is the story.

Karl Stefanovic (an Australian newsreader) wore the same suit on air every day for a year to highlight the different ways that men and women are treated in the public eye over their appearance. Not one person noticed he he always wore the same suit, but often people comment if a female newsreader wears the same dress more than once.

I have been aware of this for a number of years and am quite annoyed by it. I know it's not as serious as equal pay, or FGM, but it's one of those little annoying things, that affects only women.

Look at the angst on here about women 'needing' to buy a new dress for every wedding they attend, whereas men just wear either their only suit, or one of a small selection.

One of the BBC Breakfast newsreaders tried and failed to claim a clothing allowance against her tax bill on the basis that she was expected to wear lots of different outfits and not wear the same thing 'too often'.

It's interesting that the above story is also in the Daily Mail, appararently without a hint of irony, as a regular feature of their 'sidebar of shame' is when famous women are photographed while, shock horror, wearing the same clothes more than once.

It was also considered newsworthy earlier this year that Angela Merkel routinely appears in public wearing clothes that she has been seen in before. I have yet to see multiple news stories about David Cameron wearing the same suit more than once FFS.

I think if he'd worn the exact same outfit every day, it would have made more of a point. As it was, he changed shirts and ties which did change his outfit day to day.

Still, there's an interesting point about how men's fashion is more of a 'uniform' with less possibility for expression or flair. I'm not sure if that's a pro or a con, probably a bit of both.
