Why dress like this?

I feel very depressed that more and more female celebrities decide to dress like this. These celebrities, like it or not, are role models for many girls and I feel it sets a very scary tone for what young girls may aspire too.

I do believe everyone has freedom of choice and can wear what they want, but I think that more often than not, this type of outfit is done as a publicity stunt.

Am I being too harsh, or does anyone agree?

Why dress like this?

Who are they?

The dresses are horrible. I sort of agree with you but more from the point of view that simply as dresses they are ugly and unflattering.

Torn tbh, on the one hand that's the sort of stuff I wore willingly when I was younger and could pull it off.

On the other it isn't the best example to set if you are in an influential position.

Plus of course it's very much women as decoration, and looks especially bad when the men do not wear anything even slightly equivalent.

It'd be nice if it was something that was free of all the added societal baggage.

this type of outfit is done as a publicity stunt.

I'm sure that's exactly why they do it. Because I have to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they don't realise how fucking ridiculous they look. Especially at an event where the man next to them is wearing a tux.

Actually, is it definitely real?

Miley Cyrus and Rihanna

Course it's for publicity, its their thing.

Yeah, I suppose I'm viewing it from the women as decoration perspective. It's Rhianna and Milyie Cyrus (may have spelt names incorrectly)

I imagine they do it because it is the fashion
Because young people always want to do "extreme" stuff
If they are in showbiz (who are they?) then attracting attention is always a good move

TBH personally that picture doesn't bother me at all because the women, especially the blonde one, looks kind of interesting, from the expressions on their faces. It's when women are presented / present themselves with a sort of submissive look that it bothers me. I was thinking about this the other day as to why over the years some scantily clad female performers bother me and some don't and it's a bit complicated and to do with the purpose / attitude somehow but is probably a bit too long to go into here Grin

e.g. Page 3 fucks me off and these women don't in this picture. Nor does the bloke. Is my thoughts Smile

Because they're comfortable with their bodies and like to show them off?

Why does anyone dress the way they do?

I really don't have a problem with it. They're doing it for effect and publicity. That's how they make their money.

I wore not much more on Friday night and I am old and fat. For effect. It was a fun night.

Having said that clearly if the bondage PVC boob tape look hits the high street any time soon I will be a bit aghast.

That's my job as a 40yo woman though isn't it?

I don't really mind what people wear and stuff, it's when women are presented as passive sex objects that I get pissed off.

It's nothing new.
It gets them attention.
The question is, why don't men dress like that?

Why dress like this?

It's not that edgy. Miley thingy is wearing a body stocking of some sort with it. Purely for effect. AKA she's a chicken. Grin

Briar - you should have seen some of the men on Friday night Grin

Sorry I shall leave now ....

I was just googling images of siouxsie sioux who used to wear some pretty keen bondage type stuff.

It's not new, of course.

I'm not bothered by what other women wear. I'm bothered by a culture that makes what women wear a news story.

Canshopwillshop · 02/11/2014 21:15

It's hardly a new thing. They are young fit celebs and will dress to show off - think back to the Madonna era (yes, I am old). Sex sells.

true tondelayo.

I am hugely bothered by some images / presentations of women and girls and not by others and it's not really got anything to do with how much flesh is showing but more the purpose of showing that flesh and the attitude somehow. Oh I don't know it's really hard to explain.

Women are the sex class. It's what we are judged on and one of the few ways we are valued. It's only to be expected therefore that some women will make their way in the world by playing on this. I don't blame either of them individually I just wish there were better opportunities for women without having to be decoration.

There are plenty of opportunities for women without having to be decoration. Your post is over-egging the pudding.

I'm with the dresses are ugly gang.

Who cares what Miley and Rihanna wear, but if I had their money and clout I'd go for a look a million times more stylish.
