Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Well, that was a bloody waste of time, wasn't it?

All that careful thoughtful comment and interesting discussion gone because of some arbitrary not-to-be-broken-even-if-in-this-case-it's-daft rule. Why on earth was it reported?

Are you absolutely SURE it wasn't because it was all shouty and aggressive? Wink

Was it the TAAT?

Not really Grin

It was very interesting, tbf. Probably because it was on neutral ground.

I really really HATE the stupid taat rule on Mumsnet.

The batteries in my FWR klaxon must need changing. Totally missed it.

Yeah I think it was pretty bullshit to delete the second thread it may have started off as a TAAT and I can see why that's annoying, but it quickly became an interesting discussion. I think the angle on it was different too, it was like okay here is what people think of us, what can we in FWR do to improve things?

I also think it's BS that the first thread, which is 95% bitching about feminists and very negative, can stay and the second thread which was much more mixed and positive has to go.

Anyway I guess this will disappear soon too so til next time

I completely missed it. I got a sense that it existed when I didn't have time to read it, and now it's too late. What did it say? (hopeless question I know, sorry)

Strangely enough, I was coming back to post a thought on that thread because I didn't want to post in AIBU because of it's reputation as being mean and shouty...

Report
scarevola · 31/10/2014 14:07

TAATs are almost invariably deleted.

No topic should be treated differently.

Report
Hakluyt · 31/10/2014 14:56

I don't think any topic should be treated differently. But I think that in this case the OP was broadly a taat but immediately people took the time to post thoughtful and interesting things, a good discussion was going on and bam- gone. While another thread largely composed, as far as I can see, of slagging off feminists stays. I am sooooo pissed off about this!

How annoying, I didn't get to see I there were any posts in response to mine. Wondered where it had gone, was interesting.

It is a shame when the more thoughtful and useful of e 2 threads gets zapped, there were some interesting comments made and suggestions for possible discussion that would interest other women. I should have saved it, but felt that, as it was such a different discussion it would be allowed to stand.

I have no doubt this will be zapped too. AIBU is terrifying by the way. So much shouty ranting, so much, ooh, I've name changed to slag this person off. Meh.

I'm really confused. Which threat? And what is a TAAT? Have googled and all that comes up is 'Two at a Time' (knitting stitch)!

scarevola · 31/10/2014 15:19

It's a Thread About A Thread.

The MN norm being that you deal with issues on the thread itself, not start another one.

And that applies to all topics and isn't related to how bright or otherwise one group of MNetters thinks another is.

TheLateKateMumsnet · 31/10/2014 15:57

Hullo all,

Sorry - looks like we might have made the wrong call on this occasion. We had received about 10 reports about that other thread, and it did seem very much like a thread rehashing another.

We've had another look, and can see that many of you were making good points that were on tangentially connected to the other thread - so we've now reinstated it. We'd appreciate it if people could keep their comments about FWR, and keep within the talk guidelines - if it looks like it's descending into personal attacks we may have to delete it.

Whilst we're here - Mintyy, we don't think it's very fair to call people who report stuff "not very bright...like a sheep". We ask people to report things to us, as we're a post moderated site and it's the only way to keep MN a good place to be- so we've deleted your post.

Rumplestrumpet · 31/10/2014 15:59

Well it wasn't a complete waste of time - it was a real insight for me, AND, like many others, encouraged me to post on FWR for the first time ever!

I reported it immediately after it opened last night. Because it was clearly a TAAT and I thought the OP was inflammatory. And no-one likes commenting on a thread in good faith, and realising that another thread has been opened at the same time in another part of the board so everyone can point and snigger (which is what TAATs feel like). So I absolutely stand by the reporting at that point.

However, after not having been around today I see that both threads actually developed into something interesting and constructive so I think it's fine MN reinstated it.

But I'm not a sheep, thanks. IMO the threads weren't started with the best of intentions, that they (both, actually) then became constructive threads was by no means a given at 11pm last night.
