Did men really do this to their wives

I have been watching 'I love Lucy' .In one or 2 of the episodes Lucy's husband spanks her. This is a 1950s mainstraem sitcom so definitely not anything fetishist/porn about it? I have also seen similar things in cowboy films. Was this really considered acceptable as recently as the mid 20th century?

Of course not.

No idea.

You'd probably need to ask an american / someone who knew about their culture what it was all about.

Confused kinky spanking or like a parent/teacher would to a child?

like a parent and a naughty child.

And I presume it's not a "spur of the moment" thing either? So they're like "come here wife and let me spank you for your disobedience." And the wife just does it.

Disturbing.

Can't say as it's something I've heard of. Can't see my Grandmother putting up with it either to be fair. It does seem to be a thread running through a fair amount of US TV and film from the era though. It's also in Gone With The Wind. It's always been slightly disturbing to me though.

is it in the taming of the shrew? i seem to remember it is but this is more from having watched kiss me kate not htat long ago (oh how we laughed at the humorous portrayal of domestic violence in a showtunes setting)

Actually, yes

A female relative of mine has told me that her husband "put her over his knee" when she was caught chatting inappropriately with a man

This was in the 1960's, in a white catholic family

Is it an exercise in humiliation?

I've just googled and read about that Empire...jeez!

A bit of domestic violence solves everything then...Ffs

Fucking hell. About halfway down, instructions on how to assault your wife.

"she needs th release of guilt that this form of punishment brings"

Ludways · 26/10/2014 22:36

I've seen the episode, it was meant to be funny, not representative of real life.

"because of your love and discipline, your fights no longer last for days or even hours"

My god.

Are there any of these fuckers active in the uk?

You wouldn't see it in a sitcom today though
