Life Insurance adds

Am stick at home at the moment waiting for back surgery. Been watching a lot of crap TV.

About a week or two ago the fact that there was at least one or two of these adds every interval.

Ashamed to say it took me a wee while to figure out why they were pissing me off so much. I mean it's the responsible thing to do if you can, to have life insurance.

But all of these adds follow the same scenario. All so far have been male led and all of them are about the man taking insurance out so his wife and children can be looked after if anything happens to him.

There is not one add showing a woman taking/needing insurance to help cover her contrabution to the family.

The one that really hacks me off shows 30 something male coming in from work calling re: insurance, agreeing to the quote and commenting that the amount will cover the mortgage.

His wife is shown in the background silent & smiling, putting dinner on the table etc. what if she dies?
Who'll do all that?
Will his wage suddenly stretch to cover childcare?
All the other 'little' jobs that she currently does, because even if he is the best and does his share normally covering the jobs a wife does will cost.
Or what of she gets ill and he needs to quit work to care for her?
His serious illness clause won't cover that will it? And all the extra costs serious illness incurs.

Even in my situation, no children, able to hobble around slowly, an end in sight has cost money. For a start I'll go on long term sick pay soon (thankfully I took out salary protection so it gets topped up).
I can't drive so cabs for short journeys OH taking time off for long ones as I can take train etc.
OH working longer hours to make up time so not even having time to cover his 'normal' 50% of housework so getting in a cleaner.
Heating bill increased as I'm at home all day.

And lots of other silly little things.

I'd hate to add childcare on to that too.

Sorry I am rambling here bit it really reminded me how little a woman contribution is valued.
Does matter if you work in or out of the home the important thing is that there's a MANs wage coming in. Hugely insulting to all lone parents too

I've seen that and I totally agree.

(but after my acid throwing comment on another thread, I feel the need to admit there is one with a dark haired northern man who I rather fancy.
I do like men)

The 30 second conversation to sort out life insurance confused

Obviously the wife is not working so he is the important one. But I wonder if the bloke realised that his wife dying might affect his job a lot.

Glad it's not just me !!

Just imagine the advert in reverse - wife comes home, ignores husband, on phone to gorgeous attractive young man and gets it sorted.

(you have to have a young attractive person on the phone - it's the law grin )

Would never happen.

I think we should film an advert like that and do a pirate channel

Or what about if the woman is the main breadwinner for the family? I sense heads exploding all over thenadvertising world at that concept. Radical.

*the advertising

And the kids come home and the dad's making tea. Without fussing. Or is cleaning wthout having to comment on the turbo boost.

Radical idea grin

I was explaining on the "are you financially independent?" thread over in AIBU (or maybe chat) that if I died, dh would have to give up work and go on benefits as he could never afford child care for 3 babies on his salary..and pay rent. Most people would see my situation and see me as "living off dh" he absolutely needs me to keep himself in the lifestyle he is accustomed to. We need to sort out life insurance and have been dithering over getting it sorted for years. We'd both be fucked really if the other died.

The other financial commercials that wind me up..

Man needing a loan to buy stupidly expensive ring to propose (seen that one done a million times) don't ad companies ever try and be interesting

Man needing loan or financial planning because his daughter (who is presumably an adult) is getting married confused

Man needing loan because son needs to go to university.

Women never pay for any of these things, and daughters never contribute to their own weddings. They just wait for their university educated fiance to ask them and then for daddy to pay for it.

Why isn't there a feminist channel stickemup?

They have a channel for everything else? confused.

The only channels for women are ghettos of misery porn and made for TV stalker porn. Combined with light romcoms and shit "loose women" style chat shows.
