Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A small 'victory'

I know there are many examples of sexism/misogyny in society, but I personally find all male professional conference programmes particularly offensive and annoying. I do my best to challenge them when I see them mainly on Twitter.

I saw that TEDx was coming to London in the new year, but was disappointed to see that the 4 speakers used to illustrate the event on the homepage were all male. And this was ironically despite the fact Laura Bates of Everyday Sexism is speaking (and other women).

So I challenged them. They said it was technical, the website picks up the photos in the order of who confirmed first. Anyway, they tweeted me this am and have changed it, so it now features men and women.

Obviously in the scheme of things this is small, but I was really pleased that I'd made a difference. Smile Thought I'd share on this board where I lurk but rarely post.

Good for you and while it is fair enough that it happened accidentally (and that no one noticed it...hmmm) at least they fixed it!

Thanks.

The real problem are those that don't bother with a balanced line up in the first place.

I think you did a good job there Smile

Hopefully they will remember for next time too....

I like it when you have posters and things where they've obviously thought "right we need inclusivity here" which usually amounts to a bunch of white men, with one non white man, maybe 2, and one woman. Because of course in the UK women are as small a % of the population as non white people. I give extra marks to them if they just have one non white woman in a sea of white men as their entire stab at it Grin
