Listening to LBC talk about equal pay

A lady phoned in to say that she applied to an engineering firm and "because she was a girl" (and they'd never hired one before!), they put her on a rate of pay £1000 pounds less because they didn't know whether she'd be any good! After six weeks, she'd proved her worth and her wage was raised to the standard rate.

This was decided not to be discrimination in their discussion Hmm

Another caller said she was earning less than her three male counterparts but apparently there was no reason to say she was being discriminated against because the other three were sagittariuses(sp.?)?!

LBC is what my DP calls London's Barmiest Conversation. I listen to it every day and it drives me up the wall. Which presenter was hosting this discussion? Some are definitely worse than others but the presenters and callers are usually less than enlightened on this sort of topic.

Didn't know if she would be any good 'because she's a girl'? What was an engineering firm doing employing a child anyway? Wink

It's hard to believe we are 2012 sometimes, it feels like the Dark Ages.

I know. I feel the same about it but can't stop listening! Sometimes though, it just gets to epic proportions of ridiculousness.

Think his name was James O'Brien, something similar to anyway. He kept saying "Does that make me a sexist? I don't think it does". Well, it DOES!

I agree. Yet so many people are maintaining equality doesn't exist any longer Hmm.

Oh he is just awful kate and the really depressing thing is that he is probably the most left-wing, liberal presenter on the whole damn station! He often says stuff like that 'I really don't think I'm being sexist by saying X', or 'I hope I don't sound smug by saying X' Hmm He's the smuggest twit going!

Ever heard him talk about marriage? There's a treat for you. He will not accept that stable committed relationships outside marriage are equally valid, and cannot get his head around the idea that not all women are desperate to get hitched. Makes me Angry yet I still keep listening

Nick Ferrari outdid himself this morning. He was talking about a Brazilian woman who has auctioned off her virginity to pay for her studies. How downright Sad. The 'highest bidder' paid about £250,000. NF urged listeners to look at her photo in the Sun today as he was sure we would all agree it was 'worth every penny'. How I kept my toast down I will never know Angry

Yeah, he was saying those things when I was listening too. Left wing Grin.

No, that's a pleasure I've not experienced yet! Same here, it's strangely addictive to get annoyed though.

I didn't listen but it sounds awful. Yeuch, because whether the guy got his money's worth was in any way important to the discussion Hmm. They keep harping on about how many extra listeners they've gained and it makes me a bit scared to think of people nodding along with this kind of rubbish.

'They keep harping on about how many extra listeners they've gained and it makes me a bit scared to think of people nodding along with this kind of rubbish. '

And you do realise that you and I make up 2 of those numbers? Wink It is very entertaining, much moreso than some of the drivel you hear on music radio stations, but it certainly is scary to think of people nodding along and agreeing with all the hysteria.

Grin Guilty as charged! We're not nodders though. Fingers crossed all their extra listeners are head shakers and fist clenchers too Grin.
