So I was on Thesaurus.com just now looking for alternitive words to "diverse" and right below the header and above an ad for an instant grammar checker were these links

There was also another for "Top tips for a tiny belly".

This is a Thesaurus site! Why do these adds need to be here? And young girls doing homework? Do they really need to read this sort of stuff?

I'm probably not making much sense, Just needed a rant.

lol - this actually says more about you or at least the computer you are using rather than the site you are visiting. When using the internet a record is kept of the sites visited and the ads are targeted accordingly. When I visited thesaurus.com just now the ads targeted at me where a Scottish Government campaign and Scottish TV.

WoTmania · 21/01/2012 18:39

I got the belly fat one too and it keeps coming up on FB no matter how many times I get rid of it. Some seem to just come up no matter what searches you do or sites you usually visit.

I was DPs little brothers computer so now I'm freaked out. Hmm :o

I still found the links funny.

Ah yes, I've done a lot of work on this in a work sense. It's fascinating.
Some people find that automatic targetted advertising helpful and others regard it has a huge infringement of their privacy and you caught the issue exactly right - that many families share a computer if they are rich enough to own one at all and dont' log in and out with different pass words so you might see that last night your husband had been on divorce web sites or your boyfriend on wedding ring sites or pro or anti hunting or whatever because of the ads you see next day.

Those adverts freak me out - you go looking for shelves or shoes or swimsuits or something then you get stalked all around the Internet by them,

Report
SardineQueen · 21/01/2012 21:58

I really don't like these adverts either.

Anyway in the sake of scientific endeavour I went onto thesaurus.com and searched the first word that came into my head (which was fail-safe for some reason Confused)

I got

Tips for tiny belly
why men pull away
exercise your brain
instant grammar checker

Could it be that men pull away because I am fat, thick, and talk in txt spk? lol

Maybe it's a reflection of spending too much time on MN?

I get those belly ones all the time, even though I don't post on slimming threads.

CoffeeCamel · 21/01/2012 22:05

I get the belly fat and anti-ageing ones, and I've never investigated diet or anti-ageing products in my life. I reckon they're the ones that get shown automatically to women of a certain age Grin.

outofbodyexperience · 21/01/2012 22:05

ha!
i got 'why men pull away'
'become a you-tube partner'
and 'chakrahealing.com'

i have no idea why the first one (i suspect they pay more ad money and so get everyone), but the you-tube one is solely becuase someone on here sent me a you-tube link about a specific exercise - i clicked on it once... and the chakra healing might be because i was googling to see if rainforest crisps were gluten free. ergo i am clearly you-tube addicted hippy with marital problems.

it is utter bollocks. isn't there some way you can block all this tosh? some ad-blocker thingy?

i wondered about mn, too, meditrina. how funny that the crap belly fat ads are targeted at middle aged wimmin who have sedentary hobbies.... Grin

they can feck the feck off though. i was you-tubing a shred move. Wink

outofbodyexperience · 21/01/2012 22:09

ah..... could it be linked to your search word too? i searched 'feminist' this time and the ads were 'what is a press release', 'theprecarious.com' (which apparently is a radical politics site), and of course (cos all feminists have trouble keeping a bloke Wink) the 'catch him and keep him' one.

ha.

hahahah brilliant

I put in "kitten" thinking maybe some things about lovely flowery girly stuff I got

canine hydrotherapy
pet ashes made into glass

and the ubiquitous how to keep your man

The word "space rocket" reassuringly gave links about the channel tunnel, GPs tracking systems and "Service contracts for vertical Carousels and Shuttle lifts."

And about having a tiny belly
And keeping a man

Natch Wink

meditrina · 21/01/2012 22:17

I got the belly one (as I seem to do everywhere), one for making money working from home (illustrated with mother and baby), horoscopes and ones related to the word I searched.

Nothing about keeping a man.

Maybe the machine thinks I'm a lost cause...

Report
outofbodyexperience · 21/01/2012 22:18

kitten! ha ha ha!

this could literally keep me amused for hours and totally screw up their marketing...

we all need a tiny belly and a man. c'mon. you know that.

What kind of thesaurus is this?

Report
Jux · 21/01/2012 22:22

One word: Adblock.

Report
SardineQueen · 21/01/2012 22:24

That won't resolve my penis problem will it?

Report
ImpOfThePerverse · 21/01/2012 22:27

I think targeted advertising is equal opportunities in being equally crap for men and women.

Women seem to universally get lose belly fat/keep man, men get penis enhancement ads. Not much to choose between them in awfulness.

I got wonga.com and win an ipad2 lol

Maybe from my pc I would get different?

But its sad women want those sites, they don't get how men think in relationships so they need to change the way they think and feel? What about the men? Shouldn't they be learning how women think to, through open communication with the woman?

Report
outofbodyexperience · 21/01/2012 23:03

i don't think it's the women that want those sites nailak. it's the women that are getting them. totally different ball game. it's the advertisers telling women they need these things, not the women telling the advertisers they need them.

lol at lack of genitalia though.

adblock. that's it. how do you get that then? and so much screen space is devoted to advertising, what does it look like? just blank space? or is the rest of the screen rearranged if you use it?

Report
GirlWithPointyShoes · 21/01/2012 23:32

I'm home now and it's basically the same. I have been on MN on DPs little brothers PC quite a few times in the past, Could it be connected?
