mind boggles.

same reaction as you, this had to be a wind-up, and yet it seems not....

stripeybump Wed 17-Aug-11 11:17:41

Yikes! I can only they're going for the shock factor, then will show animals being abused instead of women - making a dual point. I don't think the bigwigs at PETA are that progressive though sad

steamedtreaclesponge Wed 17-Aug-11 11:18:10

Um - is this a late April Fool's joke or something?

Hmm, what great marketing - let's get people to stop exploiting animals by EXPLOITING WOMEN

stripeybump Wed 17-Aug-11 11:18:40

I don't mean sexual abuse of animals btw - bit far! <isn't it?>

jennyvaultsthewagons Wed 17-Aug-11 12:27:10

This must surely rank as one of THE most bizarre marketing campaigns ever.

It's a common observation that some people seem to place animal-related ethics higher than human-centred ones. I guess this would add to that view...

OldLadyKnowsNothing Wed 17-Aug-11 12:34:19

As I understand it, the main objection to porn is that women are exploited in the making of it. Presumably, this will be made ethically?

steamedtreaclesponge Wed 17-Aug-11 12:42:33

Well, it's one of the objections. The others are the objectification of women, the commercialisation of women's sexuality, the degradation of women in most mainstream porn...

but the idea of using porn as a tool to promote animal rights is just so weird that I don't even know where to start with it

OldLadyKnowsNothing Wed 17-Aug-11 12:58:12

At the risk of being accused of being an MRA, aren't the men in porn also objectified etc? What's degrading for either party in consensual sex, just because it's recorded and watched?

PETA have a history of campaigns based on sexual images, such as this one, showing near-naked women showering in public:

ethicalstyle.com/2011/04/chauvinism-on-display-at-petas-world-water-day-protest/

But the porn site is such a horrific idea that I'm reluctant to believe it without seeing stronger proof. I guess we'll find out...

SybilBeddows Wed 17-Aug-11 13:07:04

OldLady - very little porn is nice happy consensual sex any more. There's a good (but very disturbing) book called Pornland by Gail Dines which will fill you in on the current reality but you may wish you hadn't read it....
Men and women are not represented equally in porn. I am sure there are indeed issues for men about it causing performance anxiety etc, but women are degraded in mainstream heterosexual porn in a way that men are not. I'm not going to go into details about what sort of acts are typical because I've just had my lunch and it will make me feel very sick.

OldLadyKnowsNothing Wed 17-Aug-11 13:23:17

I know that, Sybil, but surely the point of PETA porn would be that it's not exploitative and so on?

I agree it's an odd marketing device.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon Wed 17-Aug-11 14:52:04

It's a joke, right?

Have PETA ever been boycotted before? Because I MIGHT just start boycotting them myself... grin

weeonion Wed 17-Aug-11 15:09:28

I posted this earlier on other sites. I found it on the XBIZ daily updates i get emailed to work (yep - i spend part of my working day trawlng porn industry trade journals etc!). It may never come to anything but i have checked and PETA have registered their xxxdomain. It would seem that there is no reason for ICM to refuse that so - it probably will go ahead.

The mind boggles but as others have said - PETA is well known for its links to the porn industries and really doesnt seem to care what many people think of this approach.

BonnieLassie Wed 17-Aug-11 15:29:46

Maybe it will be ethical porn involving loving couples? If it helps save animals, I'm all for it.

weeonion Wed 17-Aug-11 15:44:27

I'm all for saving animals but not through buying into / using exploitative methods.

MooncupGoddess Wed 17-Aug-11 15:47:23

The camera zooms in on a naked couple (both young and beautiful, of course) kissing passionately on a king-size divan.

MAN: Darling - can we have ethical, fully consensual intercourse?

WOMAN: Yes of course, sweetheart - AARGH! ANIMAL KILLER!

Woman spots pair of manly leather brogues beside the bed, leaps up and rushes for the door, affording viewers a full-frontal view as she does so.

hmm

giyadas Wed 17-Aug-11 16:01:49

lots of brands are buying up xxx domain names, not necessarily to use but only to protect their brand.
Wouldn't put it past peta though, not with their track record.

SybilBeddows Wed 17-Aug-11 16:06:43

but given they are doing this at all I would not be surprised if they were going to have something like a bound woman being beaten or raped, even if they don't go down the double anal route...
I would not trust them to do it ethically at all. They're trying to push the boundaries to attract attention, after all.

weeonion Wed 17-Aug-11 16:14:46

giyadas - PETA are being upfront that they do intend to have a porn site so it is not that they bought that domain to "protect" their brand from a porn site in their a similar name.

giyadas Wed 17-Aug-11 16:18:53

well, there goes my wishful thinking, but I'm not surprised.
Seems they really only want to be supported by a very specific type of person doesn't it?

HerBeX Wed 17-Aug-11 21:05:43

I'm not remotely surprised.

They hate women more than they love animals.
