And I'm not even talking about all that MTV shite. I mean REAL music - ROCK.

It's still all so fucking sexist. I've just been listening to some Grinderman (Nick cave's new band) tracks on Youtube and thinking 'Oh yes!' then I see they have a track called 'The No pussy blues'. Well they just lost a cd sale from me. Do they never actually think that some of the listeners might be women?

...or maybe I'm underestimating him. He might have just lost his cat Grin.
But seriously, it happens so often and we just put up with it. Grr!

Actually "No Pussy Blues" is a great track IMHO. Might not be exactly feminist in sentiment but not misogynistic either. It's basically about him being old, fat and ugly and trying to seduce a beautiful young woman by beautifying himself, with poetry, romance, DIY etc. and her just laughing at him and saying "she doesn't want to".

I love rap music, but it's not at all accessible.

I'm a feminist and I like Stay With Me by the Faces.

There. I've said it. I've put it out there.

I'm sorry.

I have no excuse.

Oops - just realised I phrased that a bit misleadingly lawnimp! Although that sounds like pretty interesting song :D

Tethers Grin

I hear you. That is a great song. Maybe we could justify it as part of a sub-genre celebrating sex with non-conventionally pretty women, e.g. Chelsea Hotel by Leonard Cohen.

My brain isn't working properly tonight enough to do a full comment, but there's some great stuff about sexism in rock music and gender in rock music in here.

Most music is about love/sex/ or relationships breaking up - and the majority of it is brilliant ( rap is an exception - the majority is awful )

And op - it's not just men who write sexist stuff - have you never listened to any Lily Allen or Katy Perry?

Come on Filthyfunkproject OP is talking about real proper ROCK music Wink not that horrible commercial shite. Which is offensive on a musical level, never mind any other.

I've always thought leonard cohen was pro-feminist.
that excellent line 'I ache in the places where I used to play' went round and round in my head post-childbirth. I am going to assume that's what he meant.

Celebrating sex with non-conventionally pretty women - DH suggests 'Fat Bottom Girls' and 'Whole Lotta Rosie'. Can't vouch for them in their entirety, myself.

oh right - proper ROCK music yeah - and that would be Nick Cave's new band > Nick Cave whose about 60 and couldn't pull the curtains these days - let alone a women.
I know about real ROCK music thank you - and most of it isn't about women.

Nick Cave v Katy Perry. I'll have a bit of a snigger meself at that, thanks.
rock isn't about curtains or women - music, no? it's ageless, too

I'd let Nick Cave pull my curtains.

I was using KP as an example of a woman who can be sexist towards men. Lily Allen is 100x worse, & what's out there in the mainstream is what's important ( who cares what Nick Cave's band writes? - only 50 people will listen to it )

Whatevs FFp you're plainly far more down wiv da kids than me I'll keep looking for a bit of artistic merit in my music and continue to ignore the simpering pouters/posturing hip thrusters. They have everybody else, they won't miss lil ole me

Gettingback to the OP - YANBU. I listen to Planet Rock and sometimes feel v. uncomfortable about the lyrics. They seem to hold women in pretty low esteem, as if they are only around to 'service' guitar heroes. Altho to be fair, much of the stuff they play, whilst good rock music, is old. Like the Bachmann Turner Overdrive lyrics about getting the clap from some one-night stand. Nice.

But women do throw themselves at 'rock stars' - don't you know what groupies are? - some bands will write about that.

I just feels sometimes that in songs, all women are lumped into only being men's playthings, thereby alienating half of the listeners.

I always thought that song
'Star rockets in flight
Afternoon delight'
was 'Star fuckers in sight
Afternoon delight'

I expected no better from the 70's, having seen Almost Famous.
