No? That will be because it is the Womens' World Cup

What a surprise that it is not even being mentioned on the news.

I know, I don't even LIKE football.

But it irks me that they make such a massive fuss over the mens' WC, and no one even knows that the womens' competition is running at present.

I knew.

I agree it's low profile, but it has been reported on Radio 1 newsbeat a lot this week.

Has it, MrsCog? I only knew about it cause it is being held in Germany and Germany are the defending champions, so it is being reported more widely in the German media.

I've been following it, I enjoy the women's game, you don't see disrespect towards the referee or many (if any) theatrics!

Yes. The BBC have mentioned it on several occasions.

I did. I think it was in the sunday sports section last week.

Don't know how we're doing though. When's the final?

Hope Powell is still manager isn't she?

The final is 17 July.

England have played one game so far, a 1-1 draw against Mexico, their second game is against New Zealand tomorrow. It's a must win.

Hope Powell is still manager and rumour has it she'll be manager of the GB women's team for the 2012 Olympics.

I was looking through this in the Guardian the other day. I don't know much about football (women or men's) but I found it fascinating - great photos and they all sounded very interesting and talented. In fact that's reminded me, I wanted to show DD the photos.

Oh, I stand corrected. People do know it is going on.

I knew.
Watched first game. Just like the men - expected to win and gained a valiant draw.

Well, people in the feminism section do. I'm not sure about a wider range of people. I only know because I vaguely remember reading something about it a few weeks ago and then I looked through those photos at the weekend. I don't watch football (and neither does DH) but I would definitely be aware if it was the men's world cup, as it would be unavoidable, with flags up everywhere, merchandise in supermarkets, games on in pubs etc.

Yes the womans football - we do far better than the men at this sport.

Did you know about BLIND football and how well we do at blind football in the world cup?

I didn't know it was on. Women's sport is rarely mentioned in the UK.

We've just got back from visiting DH's family in Israel, and there was women's basketball and women's volleyball on the main sports channel every night we were there. I think it was some kind of world cup. But I was so impressed that they were showing women's sports as mainstream.

Though if there had been a men's game on instead.....

It is shown on Eurosport on the Sky platform. If you haven't got Sky, you can watch Eurosport's coverage by buying a month's access to the Eurosport Player for about £3.50, which enables you to watch it live on your PC, as far as I know.

I think it's the kind of thing the BBC should show to help bring it more mainstream.
