The Red Tape Challenge consultation on scrapping the equalities act is supposed to start today. I have written a blog post about it, which ends with a link to the site so you can register your views. It would be great if you could have a look, and register any objections to scrapping this vital piece of legislation.

Look at the site, it uses the same question layout for all categories.

Should they be scrapped altogether?
Can they be merged with existing regulations?
Can we simplify them ? or reduce the bureaucracy associated with them?
Have you got any ideas to make these regulations better?
Do you think they should be left as they are?

well, yes, but the debate has already been horribly rigged. Cameron says himself that the default presumption will be that if ministers can't find a good reason to keep a law, then it will go. He has also ridiculed regulation generally callign it 'burdensome and unnecessary.' , to put primary legislatioin on equality into the same category as rules about traffic cones and call them both Red Tape is disingenuous and dangerous.

The site's been up and running for a good month or more now. There was another thread about it and there have been parliamentary questions about it. If you look through the comments on there I think the general consensus is that everyone thinks that a) the Act should never have been included on the website and b) if anything Equalities legislation should be strengthened, not weakened.

Theresa May was forced to come out with some statement that government had no intention of scrapping the Act.

So, on the one hand I agree that the government is not to be trusted and that the fact they set up this website and included the Equalities Act speaks volumes. On the other hand, I don't think they're getting the validation they were seeking from the website and they can't scrap the Act on the basis of the random anonymous responses to a website anyway. That's not to say we shouldn't all pile in there and tell them what a bunch of wankers they are how important the Equalities Act is.

Well not all of it, but it certainly needs refined. At present it is so nebulous (discrimination by association)it will lead to insane prosecutions being brought before the courts which will be seized on the Daily Wail as reason to bin it.

The problem with the 'equalities' act that it enshrines inequality, with those listed given special protections and those excluded as second class citizens

There should be no role for quotas unless they are universal, so if x percentage of the x department has to be female then space has to be created in primary teaching and nursing professions for the displaced etc
