I was sent this link yesterday.
It's not amazingly surprising. Insurance is one of the most sexist industries out there, a couple of years ago I read the gender pay gap was 40%.
SEA one of the (many) problems with this is the fact that presumably no women salespeople were invited. This means that either they were excluded from the guest list, or there aren't any. In a work culture like this you would have to wonder if the reason there weren't any top female sales people was due to a lack of talent or sexism. I am guessing the latter.
In the organisations I have worked in there have always been excellent female sales people bringing in a lot of business. In some organisations I have worked in there has been institutional sexism and women do not progress at all. There have been literally no women employed at a level above junior management. Also sexist HR policies. Women have been left under no illusion what the situation is. Although as they have generally paid well, and been prestigious, women still go to work for them. the good ones simply leave when they realise the real situation, if they are ambitious.
So this article highlights an attitude that is pervasive in parts of this industry, still. Quite aside from teh obvious wrongness of rewarding salespeople with prostitutes. So no women there. Do they have no gay male employees? Or ones who simply don't want to be associated with orgies involving paid-for sex? Or are all of their top sales people straight men who see no problem with having sex with prostitutes??? You'd be hard pressed to find a group like that in a workplace if you looked, I'd have thought. And yet they had no problem. Hmmmmm. Like employs like, and promotes like.
Just awful.
