I grew up with eminem so have a few cd's lying around my sis has aquired a few and had one on,and no joke one of the songs includes the chorus, 'its time for you to rape me again' Shock

I had to clarify with my sis , I never noticed that the first time round was pretty shocked it had gone under my radar.

any of you had this 'god I didnt notice that the first time ' wuth songs/ maybe even tv etc.

It's not so much that I didn't notice it before, it just never used to bother me.
Now that I'm getting older and especially now that I have small children, it REALLY bothers me.
I change channels on the radio when songs with swearing come on with my DCs in the car. (We live abroad so they don't bother with radio friendly edits of English songs.)

Belgium. There is a lot of English music on the radio station I listen to, which is great, but the swearing does bother me. There are some really popular songs which apparently British people don't realise have swearing in them!

It was the same in Japan, but it bothered me less as I was childless or DD was only a baby.

Yep, same in Spain (re the swearing).
We avoid the problem by only listening to the mainly talk national station or BBC internet radio....

You're right about songs though.

I was interested in a new soul artist and did the Spotify thing on his album. I had to stop listening after the third song. Sexist shite. The tunes were pretty mediocre too.

Most of the time eminems lyrics are tongue and cheek and I do listen to him but in a shoe shop is not the appropriate forum,

Some of you probs dont agree with me I've been listening to Eminem since I was 9 though so I suppose I'm not phased apart from the above example.

it wasnt the lyrics that bothered me tbh i understand that and the kids cant, it was the repeated swear words!!!

I LOVE The Wildhearts, best band I've seen live yet, but their song 'Caffeine Bomb' contains the line
"Baby can't you see I'm shitting brown water"
It's never edited out on the radio :)

lol at Eminem lyrics being tongue in cheek. I think you'll find vicious misogyny in probably every Eminem song he's made. I hate to write a whole genre off like this but yeah, rap and RnB....and most popular music is the same! And if the song doesn't sound it on the radio, just watch the video which makes it pretty clear.

He actually admitted in an old interview that after his wife & mother he views women negatively rightly or wrongly, not saying its right but at least he admits it. Alot of it is tongue and cheek if you really listen and its calmee down considerably since his daughter. People go through tar the with the same brush moments in life after trauma.

tbh noone of us would judge a woman for airing a dislike trauma for men after years of abuse why is it not okay the other way round and tbh its usually aimed at said wife/mother.

I think Sue because around the globe women are routinely oppressed and are the targets of hate speech so it's not surprising we feel uncomfortable or angry if we hear an entertainment product glamourising and entrenching that attitude even further.
On the other hand, if you regard women as fighting that oppression, lyrics airing such grievances by women are more in the realm of protest songs.

Er...does that make sense?!!

msrisotto · 01/05/2011 09:40

Tongue in cheek bullshit. It promotes violence against women, desensitizes it's listeners and brings murderous shit into mainstream media. It's not ironic or tongue in cheek or or or or or I can't stand people standing up for this man.

Report
SueSylvesterforPM · 01/05/2011 09:43

I agree the language is vile but tbh like I said he used it to air his anger like an outlet if a woman did the same thing about all men would you find it as offensive??

I think he had to get along of bile out of his system and his newer songs are a stark contrast,

Ruthchan I have the same problem too, I love pop music but can't have Belgian stations on any more due to the swearing. My children are a bit older then yours. My dd1 is 7 knows that I don't like Rihanna or Lady Gaga and that it's not for children.

Trigger warning - don't read lyrics below if easily disturbed.

They said I can't rap about being broke no more
They ain't say I can't rap about coke no more
(AH!) Slut, you think I won't choke no whore
'til the vocal cords don't work in her throat no more?!
(AH!) These motherfuckers are thinking I'm playing
Thinking I'm saying the shit cause I'm thinking it just to be saying it
(AH!) Put your hands down bitch, I ain't gonna shoot you
I'ma pull +YOU+ to this bullet, and put it through you
(AH!) Shut up slut, you're causing too much chaos
Just bend over and take it like a slut, OK Ma?
"Oh, now he's raping his own mother, abusing a whore,
snorting coke, and we gave him the Rolling Stone cover?"
You god damn right BITCH, and now it's too late
I'm triple platinum and tragedies happen in two states
I invented violence, you vile venomous volatile bitches
vain Vicadin, vrinnn Vrinnn, VRINNN! [chainsaw revs up]
Texas Chainsaw, left his brains all
dangling from his neck, while his head barely hangs on
Blood, guts, guns, cuts

Knives, lives, wives, nuns, sluts

[Chorus: Eminem]

Bitch I'ma kill you! You don't wanna fuck with me
Girls neither - you ain't nothing but a slut to me
Bitch I'ma kill you! You ain't got the balls to beef
We ain't gonna never stop beefing I don't squash the beef
You better kill me! I'ma be another rapper dead
for popping off at the mouth with shit I shouldn't said
But when they kill me - I'm bringing the world with me
Bitches too! You ain't nothing but a girl to me
.. I said you don't, wanna fuck with Shady (cause why?)
Cause Shady, will fucking kill you (ah-ha ha)
I said you don't, wanna fuck with Shady (why?)
Cause Shady, will fucking kill you..

[Eminem]
Bitch I'ma kill you! Like a murder weapon, I'ma conceal you
in a closet with mildew, sheets, pillows and film you
Buck with me, I been through hell, shut the hell up!
I'm trying to develop these pictures of the Devil to sell 'em
I ain't "acid rap," but I rap on acid
Got a new blow-up doll and just had a strap-on added
WHOOPS! Is that a subliminal hint? NO!
Just criminal intent to sodomize women again
Eminem offend? NO! Eminem insult
And if you ever give in to him, you give him an impulse
to do it again, THEN, if he does it again
you'll probably end up jumping out of something up on the 10th
(Ah!) Bitch I'ma kill you, I ain't done this ain't the chorus
I ain't even drug you in the woods yet to paint the forest
A bloodstain is orange after you wash it three or four times
in a tub but that's normal ain't it Norman?
Serial killer hiding murder material
in a cereal box on top of your stereo
Here we go again, we're out of our medicine
out of our minds, and we want in yours, let us in

etc etc

His recent stuff isn't much better. Also, it wouldn't make it better even if his lyrics were 'only' directed towards specific women. His dad wasn't around his whole life and he doesn't talk about raping or murdering him.

He does talk about killing his dad in numerous songs and his stepfather who molested /raped him

I am no way saying he's a paragon of integrity hence why I made this thread in the first place
but likes of 50 cent are far worse, my sm actually met 50 cent awful man, people focus on Eminem becasue he has something to say the most rappers don't.

I agree that 50 Cent is even worse. And that Eminem does have a go at his father and step-father in some songs. But that doesn't excuse lyrics like those quoted above.

I like "Lose Yourself" though.

I agree that 50 Cent is even worse

My SM was a worker backstage at one of his shows was carrying heavy stuff and just said 'get the fuck out my way' what a charmer

saw Eminem on Jonathan Ross he seemed pretty wired tbh. If you listen to the slim shady LP and the recovery there is a stark contrast, Tbh I am speaking as someone whos been listening to this since he first came out so I was like 9, im pretty desensitised.

Sue I think you are desensitised. Speaking as someone who very rarely listens to Eminem (although like IC I do like Lose Yourself) those lyrics msrisotto wrote down are truly shocking and disgusting and I feel you are trying to excuse them by saying he says similar things about his father/stepfather - as if that makes it alright.

I don't think it is ever alright to speak about women like that. I am sorry that he has obviously had great childhood trauma but tbh that isn't a good enough excuse.

You never made any response to the lyrics msrisotto wrote other than "He does talk about killing his dad in numerous songs and his stepfather who molested /raped him".

All your posts are making excuses for him. Read them again. "tongue-in-cheek"; suggesting his songs are getting better (which they may be for all I know) as some way of explaining he "had" to get all his vitriol out to be "nice" again. Trying to turn it around to suggest that if a woman wrote a song like that about a man we would accept it. Excusing him all the time.

I have said his lyrics are vile in earlier post I didnt see the point in repeating myself??

some of his songs are tongue in cheek not all I agree especially the one I quoted are vile. I think people target him and ignore other offending artists in the rap field that are even worse fly under the radar thats my point.
