Hello mummys this is my first post 😬 after suffering many years with very painful and long periods and trying many pills which have seem to make them worse the doctor has advised me to have Mirena coil, i'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with it and if it has helped, I have a child on my own so at the moment I have no plans on having any other children but in the future I wouldn't want to rule it out does anyone know if it affects fertility, I look forward to hearing peoples experiences many thanks 😊

You need a diagnosis first and foremost, not necessarily the mirena coil. The cause of this needs to be determined as well as treating the symptoms.

What sort of doctor have you seen to date, is it a GP?.

Have you ever seen a gynaecologist re your history of long and painful periods?. Endometriosis is a common cause of very painful periods and it can also cause heavy bleeding.

What tests did you have done and when?. Any test result done over six months ago should be discounted.

I ask also as tests like blood tests and internal ultrasound scans do not detect endometriosis if it is there.

well, I have always had very heavy periods.

3 kids and they got heavier. Nothing medically wrong, just that is how my body works.
I don;t get pain, just heavy bleeding.
I got the mirena coil after my last child was born. It was amazing.
I have very light/no periods and it has been life changing.

But I know it doesn't suit everyone. I do not get on on the pill at all, so I was worried that even the small amount fo progesterone on the mirena coil would be too much, but it has been fine.

I had my first mirena put in last month, to prevent polyps after hysteroscopy and removal. Consultant recommended i have it put in while under ga and i stupidly refused, the insertion was pretty bad, then she said i have sensitive cervix.... and a medium speculum is really painful so probably just me!
Had period pain like pain for two days after but nothing since, just having first period and its been a lot lighter and less painful than last 4 years, so, so far so good. Not noticed any symptoms otherwise but only been a month!

I had one put in about 16 months to relieve heavy bleeding caused by fibroids. I read all these miraculous stories about how people hadn’t had a period in months and sadly that didn’t happen for me. I still get heavy bleeding and flooding and have to take tranexamic acid so I can even leave the house for the first couple of days! It’s been removed tomorrow and the fibroids are being treated so I will be glad to hopefully get some closure on this! The fitting wasn’t too bad, my GP did it and struggled a bit but it was bearable and I took the rest of the day off work and worked from home the day after but probably could have gone in. It’s hard to say if the hormones have affected me - I’ve gained weight but then I’m exercising less and comfort eating / wine more because I’m in pain and bleeding heavily etc etc. Also felt quite down at times but again that could just be because I’m sick and tired of bleeding for 10 days out of every 25!!

I ended up taking northisterone because tranexamic acid did not work effectively .

Do see a gynaecologist if you do not already do so, such problems are often outside a gps general remit

The mirena completely stopped my period! But it’s different for everyone.

I started getting very long and heavy periods and after a scan and biopsy (nothing found) I had a coil.
It's definitely helped with the heaviness and they are less regular than they were. They still last 7-8 days but they are a bit less frequent.
No negative side effects and I definitely don't want to get pregnant again so it's all good for me.

Up date a year on in case anyone is following this, and wondering whether to have one done or not so I was very nervous about it as you can tell by the post, for the first six months I had very irregular bleeding,Bit I was used to it because before Had heavy bleeding all the time,After 6 months roughly it all started to calm down and then gradually became less and less now I still have periods but they are a lot lighter,I'm happy I had I done no side-effects after a year,Xxx
