Will GP do anything about me getting 'the rage' when I have period?

I get 'the rage' somewhere between 2 days before and on the first day of my period. It's my children who bear the brunt of it, leaving them in tears.

Will my GP be able to do anything about this, or this something I have to manage - not sure how though as 'the rage' momentarily consumes me. I'm usually a nice patient mum.

Many thanks.

I went on the pill, it smoothed the hormone rollercoaster and kept me more even. I cant remember the name of the pill.

Nowadays as I don't want to use hormonal contraceptives I take evening primrose oil and high strength b vits and it really works. Pmt sucks!

Watching with interest. I am the same. It’s awful and it’s got worse over the last few years and it last late longer. Used to just be the odd day for me but now it’s about a week. I feel horrible about it and wish I could sort it out.

I don't know, but I'm a fellow rager and I hate the effect of my hormones. It's like I'm not the person I'm meant to be.

Good to know not the only one. Definitely not going on the pill though - hormonal contraception made took the P out of PMT for me!

PMDD - I remember Googling it a while back actually and it rang a lot of bells. Will my GP actually do anything though?

I've started Loestrin 20 because of this. I've had only one day of rage since taking it. (The day you'd normally have a week off) but have been told by my gp to take the packs back to back for two months then have a break. (I know not everyone is given the same advice) but it has helped me massively.
So far!

I take buspirone for the week before my period. Ask your GP for it, it's been proven to be helpful for pmdd. Good luck, it's helped me a great deal.

Definitely see the GP. I was offered various options from the GP when I went with similar. It came on after my kids were born and was horrific rage every month, disappeared the day my period came. She offered anti depressants for 2 weeks a month, or a specific version of the contraceptive pill or herbal/vitamin options. In the end mine improved following some unrelated gynae surgery which meant I had to have an ovary removed, so I definitely think there was a hormonal cause for it all. And also maybe age as I’m heading towards menopause age. Good luck. I found it really scary as I felt so out of control. Flowers

Sorry just seen you pp. gp had no other choice for me. I didn't want to go on anything hormonal. Partner has had the snip and microgynon and another made me 20x worse.

I gave in, after she mentioned the coil and that was my only option apparently so took it because I couldn't (neither could my family) live like it any longer.

I have since seen people mention endometrial ablation? Not sure if that is a possibility for you. I'll be looking into it in the new year. Cause I think my only option for it is private.

I take sertaline for a similar reason. It doesn’t stop it completely but it is huuuugly better.

My Dr gave me Prozac, just to take on the days of rage but I don’t want to take it though so still continue with rages.

I’m peri, and periods are finally getting further apart. I went 6 months without periods and it was bliss, no mood swings at all. I’ve now had 2 periods, 3 weeks apart and I’m all over the place again.

I’m exactly the same OP. I’m like a different person for at least 2 days, sometimes a week before my period. I’m furious, depressed, exhausted, feel useless etc then as soon as AF appears I’m back to my usually cheerful energetic self. It’s awful. I’m looking forward to the menopause! In fact I do wonder if it’s linked to the perimenopause (am 42). The mini pill made me so so much worse and I’ve not tried anything else. Definitely worse since I had children.

Watching this thread with interest.

I agree with a PP and totally recommend trying evening primrose oil. I mentioned to the practice nurse that I was angry a lot of the time and I was unsure if it was hormonal. She said try epo first and come back if nothing changes. Never had to go back. I recommended it to a few work colleagues a few years later and they found it worked for them too.

I'm on fluoxetine for depression, which worsens at pmt time. It's made a marked difference and have since read is widely used for pmt symptoms - my GP will only prescribe to women. Added advantage is that unlike a lot of ssri meds it does not increase appetite and lead to weight gain - in fact mine has markedly reduced.

I spoke to my gp about this and her advice was to have more awareness of my cycle, so that I know it’s just pmt related!! Not the most helpful advice ever!

Like a previous poster, I’ve had an ovary removed and also the mirena coil fitted, and I do seem a bit less ragey since then, although I do still suffer with pmt.

Can evening primrose oil be taken with the mirena - sorry if that’s a silly question, no idea if it would affect it. Smile

The only known risk I am aware of with evening primrose oil is that it can soften the cervix so not recommended in pregnancy or ttc.

Thank you MrsL I’ll give it a try Flowers

I am exactly the same.

I get so angry about 4 days before. I am on the contraceptive pill, Cilest. I had a horrendous time with the Copper Coil, had to have it removed after a year. Never again.

I had to go through lots of contraceptive pills to find the right one (Mycrogynon sent me over the edge). I can't come off the pill as don't want to risk another pregnancy but would love to find something thay calms me down. I am impatient anyway so I am 100 times worse in the lead up to the time of the month!

I take evening primrose oil but perhaps not regularly enough to see a difference.

PMS has ruled my life. Can’t take hormones as they make me pre menstrual all the time. I discovered a fantastic supplement from Lamberts called Premtess, which really works, and now have switched over to Femme 45+ which has the same effect.
Real life saver.

Vitamin b6 is definitely worth a go, along with EPO. Try it for one cycle and if you see no benefit then go to your GP for more serious medication.

This will sound strange, but worth trying. People on low carb diets report much lighter periods without PMT. It was like that for me the very first month I went low carb.
Read up on the benefits on MN threads, DietDoctor etc. You have nothing to lose and it's less invasive than taking the pill.
