I used to, for about 3 years, but lost interest in it- the only way I would get books caught was through controlled releases, which seemed to miss the point a bit. I might take it up again one day. I've got loads of bookmarks/post-it notes/bags with Bookcrossing information on that need using up.

its a cool idea,perhaps it coudl be incorporated with geocaching at least that way you can pretty much garuntee it will be found. hmmm.............. I have always wondered what to do with my copy of the da vinci code!

Obviously something to do with books ... yes I get that bit ... I'm trying to figure out if I should be bookcrossing? I do alot of reading ... am I missing something here???

So do you just leave a book somewhere random or do you note the location on the site? I mean, how can you tell the book has been book crossed? or simply lost?

So it takes place in a city ... having selected some books Ive read, I then lay them in obvious places that they may be picked up by others ... what ? Do I put my name and number inside the cover and spread myself through out the land by way of my unwanted books ... is that it??

I'm quite a regular bookcrosser, have about a 30% hit on 'wild' releases.

Actually I quite fancy the idea of choosing some of my favourite books ... putting a small note/review inside the cover and planting it for someone to discover ... I probably won't do any tree climbing though!!!

Yes ... I think I might actually do this! Would you pick up a book if you found one just left in some random place like a park bench or something, as you walked by? I think I would be intrigued and pick it up ... see if I fancied reading it ... assuming there would be others like me ... it could be a good way of passing on a good read and small connections would also be made with people and the local community ... I like this idea and I'm going to start tomorrow!

So I read the thread ... decide to respond ... and maybe Im missing something here ... whats wrong that nobody can respond to my querie ... I'm pretty positive there must have been a time when you didn't know what bookcrossing was eh?
A little decency and a short explanation wouldn't hurt you would it? !!!!
Or is YOUR thread only for a special select few ... POO!!!! I smell something I think ... JEEZ I really dislike people who live in there ivory towers and think it's everyone else with the problems!!!

I'm a bookcrosser and happy to help. Bookcrossing is fun, free, environmentally friendly and generally fab! basically it is a website through which you track where books that you have registered on that site with a unique identification number travel to. You can leave books anywhere you like (not just in cities, but in parks, at bus stops, in cafes, on trains, on the beach, in churches, museums, the hairdressers, pubs - anyehere where there are people basically.). You slap a sticker on a book, leave it somewhere and hopefully somebody else will come along, pick up the book and make an entry at the website, using the special number on the book and tell you where they found the book (not always where you left it!) and what they are going to do with it. Bookcrossers in towns get together monthly to swap books between themsdelves in a more formal way and the website has a lot of forums where you can talk books. I have made some lovely new friends with it and have read a lot of books that I would not otherwise have tried. I still spend £££s on books though! I'm Dorothyredboots on bookcrossing too so feel free to have a look at my shelf on there and see what we get up to.

aren't you worried that the book will just get binned? Can you not just recycle the books via charity shops, that way money goes to charidee too! Ive never found one, but will definately keep my eye open now!

I like the idea but haven't tried it. Have been using readitswapit recently and had a great time before Christmas, but at the moment most of the books I have left to swap aren't that great. But not dealing with post, either having to post or having to retrieve parcels from the Post Office, has its advantages.

same as bikerunsnowflake...i was disappointed because it seemed like an interesting thing to do.... you can improve your hit rate if you go to established book crossing zones but none near me and i wasn't enthusiastic enough to start one

I'm all calmed down now ... I was a bit strong but it just felt like I was being ignored over and over ... saw it the wrong way, perhaps being a bit precious and sensitive ... I started in such a cheery mood too!!!

I found a book crossing book once in the art gallery in town but it was crap so I never read it
