These are the authors who came up when I put Elliot Perlman in Literature Map. I haven't included authors I've read.

If you've read something by one of these people, what did you think of it? I'm searching for authors I'll enjoy as much as Robertson Davies. So far I've found Perlman, Timothy Findley, Marisha Pessl, all of whom I enjoy.

Included in that map, though, was Dean Koontz who I think is one of the worst writers I've ever had the misfortune to read!

Restoration by Rose Tremain is one of the best books I have ever read (and I've read a few, having worked in the trade). I would recommend it to anyone, it is really superb. Fascinating, really deeply moving, wonderful.

T C Boyle is a wonderful writer.
I've read most of his but really loved Drop City - he's very American but in a good way

I like Tremain and Eugenides - The Virgin Suicides is v good indeed (better than Middlesex imho). Restoration by Rose Tremain is good: have read others of hers too but forget which.

I like Mark Haddon, I find him funny and interesting. My Mum likes Margaret Laurence (think she read one called Stone angel or something like that) and she also enjoys Robertson Davies.(so do I) Is Lucy Maude Montgomery the author of all the Anne of Green Gables books - or am I muddling her with someone else? If she is I don't see much connection, other than the Canadian one, with Robertson Davies. But A of GG is a lovely book if you haven't read it.

Mark Haddon is brilliant author, very funny but hugely thought provoking too.

Rohinton Mistry - A Fine Balance great book, really got into the characters.

Ann Marie MacDonald - I've read 2 (not sure if she's writeen others? Fall on Your Knees and The Way the Crow Flies

Middlesex - Jeffery Eugenides - also a great book. slow to start, and a few boring bits inbetween but worth the slog

Mark Haddon wrote Curious INcident of the dog in the night about an autistic boy, is anotehr good read,.

I love Rose Tremain - she is an utterly brilliant writer. Anne Marie Macdonald - I've only read Fall on your Knees which I think is probably the bleakest, most depressing book I've ever read (Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure excepted). I like Mark Haddon's Curious Incident but was less keen on the other one.

Paul Auster one of my favourite current writers. He is brilliant.

Ann Marie MacDonald is brilliant, but can be tough at times. Both her novels were incredible reads, she is an amazing writer. Try to get past the sometimes slow beginnings - she is well worth it.

Anne Marie MacDonald has just written the two ramonaquimby mentions, but they are totally brilliant, if not especially happy books. I'm desperate for her to write another! Rose Tremain also brilliant, if serious.

I have read Mark Haddon, I quite liked the Dog in the Night thing, but the other one left me very lukewarm.

I like the sound of Tremain and MacDonald, in fact I like the sound of all of them. I'd better get LOTS of bk tokens for Xmas!

Rose Tremain is great and every book of hers is different, so if you don't like one, don't be put off trying another. I particularly enjoyed "The Road Home" and "Music and Silence".

I've just this morning finished reading 7 Types of Ambiguity by Perlman. I read 5 Dollars a while ago.

Highly recommended. Especially Ambiguity which was really quite superb.

I have read:

The Road Home by Rose Tremain. It was alright. I bought it as it had won the Orange Broadband Prize. It certainly didn't make me want to read any of her other books.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Mark Haddon. I read this a few years ago and liked it.

I am currently reading American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld and really enjoying it.

I really liked Mark Haddon's "A Spot of Bother" and "The Curious Incident..." I hated Rohinton Mistry's "A Fine Balance" - tried 3 times but couldn't finish it, which is unusual for me. I'm looking forward to reading "American Wife" &, on the strength of this thread, will look out for Rose Tremain. Happy reading! Let us know how you get on.

Absolutely loved Rohinton Mistry's "A Fine Balance" but it was very distressing in parts. Also very much enjoyed "American Wife" - an easy read.
