What we're reading

Further to my previous rant any recommendations for me?

As I hated the last book I read (I Don't Know How She Does It) I'm now looking for something to turn the tide of rubbish I seem to have been reading recently.

Criteria required:

  1. Not too chick lit-y
  2. Not a weepy (DEF no cancer / terminal illness)
  3. Not a love story
  4. Not too masculine (urban decay, trainspotting-esque etc)
  5. Preferably fiction
  6. Thought provoking

    Any suggestions gratefully received!

The House of Sleep by Jonathan Coe is a great read. Think it fits all your criteria.

Ooh they both look good - thank you.

Hercules, have read the Lovely Bones and it was excellent (tho thought the ending was a bit odd when she went into his body but can forgive her that!)

Apparently when she was interviewed she was asked about the weird ending and said she struggled with finding a suitable one. She started lucky before lovely bones then stopped as too much anf then wrote LB.
I enjoyed both and am going to read more of hers.
