Ahem - Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon? Not sure why it reminds me of A Thousand Splendid Suns but somehow it does. A very lovely book.

I've just read a book by Eva Rice called "The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets" - I have no idea if it is similar to what you've been reading but it is utterly fabulous, set in the 1950s, narrated from the point of view of an 18-year-old girl .... sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I want other people to enjoy it too!

I have 2dds - one is 5 and the other 6 months. I have a degree and used to read lots but after dd1 I could only manage "easy read" chick-lit - so am hoping to move back to more classic stuff gradually!
I liked TSSuns as it was really interesting, great plot and still very readable when you've got baby-brain. Couldn't put it down and I love that feeling about books.

More suggestions gratefully received as I am going to compile a list for the library/our fab local charity shops!

Oh yes - all of those Tillyscoutsmum. The Book Thief is beautiful and I loved Half of a Yellow Sun; both were books that stayed with me. Also The Time Traveller's Wife just sprang to mind. I thought was a beautifully weird love story. I haven't read The Bookseller of Kabul but oddly I bought it today (along with Memory Keeper's Daughter). Great to have some decent books to read

I have read both the Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns just recently.

A friend of mine was also reading the same and she said as she was finishing 'what shall I read now?' altho very different, I suggested Angelas Ashes and she really loved it.

At the moment I am reading The Fourth Queen by a Pamela someone (errrr) (book upstairs) and it's set in the Harem of some Emperor of Morocco in the late 1700... it's very colourful and 'hot' in both terms of the word, I'm really enjoying it.

Another book I suggested to a few who said it was brilliant (and who had also enjoyed the Khaled Housein books) is the Red Tent by Anita Diamant (very feminist book) but deeply rich.

I have just finished The Book Thief and can honestly say it is the most moving book I have ever read!!

Think you might like Mudbound by Hilary Jordan.

If you liked A Thousand Splendid Suns, do read The Bookseller of Kabul. It's an account of a Norwegian journalist who lived with the bookseller and his family in Kabul. Hugely insightful, and true.

A book I would recommend that is a different topic completely (about Ireland) but is equally moving without being sentimental is the Secret Scriptures.

It hit the same nerves as A Thousand Splendid Suns. Although it was not as sad. I remember crying all the way through ATSS.
