Do you like biography? "The Divine Sarah" by Arthur gold and someone ellse ... is interesting. it's about Sarah Bernhardt but you can justify it on the grounds that it's about celebrity culture.

There was a book out recently about that was a fictionalised account of the events in Pope's "Rape of the Lock" - and I've forgotten what it's called. It was up and down in terms of writing but, on the whole, pretty interesting, moved along at a cracking pace and light but not embarrassingly so. I'll see if I can remember what it was called.

Do you like the C. J. Sansom books?

I've just finished reading 'Engleby' by Sebastian Faulks. Not his usual thing at all - it's a thriller. Gripping, intelligent and beautifully written.

And I've just started 'The Suspicions of Mr Whicher' which seems very promising and if you like crime, would be perfect.

How about Kate Atkinson - she's written a few good crime ones. Also Minette Walters are always very gripping and engrossing.
