Italian detective. Lots of nice food, a happily married detective who isn't an alcoholic, interesting stories. Fab.

I cannot read Mo Hayder anymore now that I have dcs. But I managed to get through Birdman and The Treatment prior. She is unparalleled.

I can only think of the very obvious female crime writers, and I assume you've read the main male writers too (Michael Connelly etc). Have you tried Henning Mankell?

Read all Karin Slaughter's (even the last one... not sure about the ending, can't wait for the next one...) and didn't really like Pig Island by Mo Hayder, and I've heard that that was the least graphic of the lot, so not sure I really want to try her.

Yes, I'm fairly Val McDermid-ed up but not tried the others mentioned so far.

Am doing a list so I know what to look for, keep 'em coming...

Well as you're a fan of Val and Karin and I am too, you should certainly like Jeffery Deaver - have you read him?

Also like the Sue Grafton alphabet series already mentioned (though you have to cast your memory back to times pre mobile phones for her stories), and Kathy Reichs (some of hers are better than others IMO).
