Scary Book Alert - If you want to be terrified read The Birthing House by Christopher ransom

But I found it very dark and gruesome, kind of the next if somewhat trashier step from Shirley Jackson's masterpiece The Haunting

His prose is very interesting though, his mind works in an unusual sideways way when describing thoughts, slightly Stephen King-y but less confident,
I like his edible descriptions too - lots of things are 'chocolate like' for example!

Anyone else read it?

Just finished this having bought this on this threads recommendation, and I thought it swung from really good to really pants and just fizzled at the end, it was alright but I have read scarier.

argh I resented the hours of my life wasted on that book!

what was the point of any of it, the album? his wife? the confusing ending?

the only characters I liked were the dogs, and the only scary bit was that doll - and even then I knew it was a stupid thing to be scared of

Yep the doll was freaky and I felt very sorry for the dogs but otherwise no, not good.

Hmm. I've started it, read a few pages and stopped. It hasn't grabbed me so far.

And now I don't know if I should carry on if it's scary.

I thought the story overall was crap - but YEP, there are some scary bits in it
