We've done: Gobbolino the Witch's Cat (massively popular)
Enormous Crocodile (quite popular)
and currently doing the Enchanted wood books (also massively popular - 'I love moonface mummy I wish he was in real life' etc etc)

There is only so much Enid I can take in my life! What next?

we were given one of the sophie books, have to look up the title. However dd didn't like it. We just used books like the animal ark series and michael morphugo.

some dick king smith books are great too

my fave is noah's brother....not a very well known one....great for older kids too with lots of 'hidden' stuff in that younger kids wont 'get' but still a good 'read aloud' book for 5 year olds.....

I used to love Charlotte's Web and Stig of the Dump.

scotlou Wed 02-Mar-05 12:55:12

My ds liked "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "The Witches". I need ideas too - Dick King Smith sounds good.

Oh yes - Roald Dahl books are great too . Forgot about him.

Def Charlotte's Web. I cried though! Any Dahl is a pleasure to read I find. What about My naughty little sister? My ds liked those. They're quite brief individual stories though, not one long story. I'm about to try reading ds Alice in Wonderland but suspect your dd's a bit young for that yet.

sorry, should have said that we've done my naughty little sister, horrid henry and flat stanley.

She's definitely a fantasy, animals type of girl.

www we have the dvd of charlottes web and she has watched it many many times but I'm sure she'd love the book, thanks.

oooh witches - they sound good

have also remembered Polly and the Stupid Wolf

Marina Wed 02-Mar-05 13:09:39

Philippa Pearce, A Dog so Small?
Definitely recommend Clever Polly too!
Crumbs Enid, you must be all Blytoned out. I am starting to feel the same about Horrid effing Henry.

Marina Wed 02-Mar-05 13:10:17

And Utterly Me, Clarice Bean, is BRILLIANT. Ds adored it.

Enid Wed 02-Mar-05 13:13:16

I got so sick of Horrid Henry I hid one of the new HH books that dd1 got for Xmas

Enid Wed 02-Mar-05 13:15:28

oh gawd, the wishing chair, she would love that - thanks lockets, may buy it and hide it when I can face more Enid.

no recommendations other than the others (though dd likes roald dahl as well) but gobbolino is a HUGE hit here. In fact, we see a black cat on the way to school almost every day and the kids are convinced it's Sootica.

Enid Wed 02-Mar-05 13:17:54

our cat is actually called Mildred (there was George too but he died) but both dds insist on calling her sootica poor thing is soooo confused.

Pollyanna Wed 02-Mar-05 13:21:10

The rainbow fairy and the weather fairy series of books (sorry can't remember who they are by) - my dd (and ds) really enjoyed them.

bee3 Wed 02-Mar-05 13:24:29

I can recommend the Worst Witch stories, and The Minpins (another Roald Dahl). Have also had great success with different anthologies of short stories from Barefoot Books - really beautifully illustrated, and lots of different collections (animals, around the world, princesses etc etc)

WideWebWitch Wed 02-Mar-05 16:10:40

lol at hiding gifts enid! dd's just emptied lots of books off a shelf and among them was The Secret Garden, what about that?

serenequeen Wed 02-Mar-05 16:12:11

MunchedTooManyMarsLady Wed 02-Mar-05 16:13:36

Frizbe Wed 02-Mar-05 16:15:57
