Anyone remember this book - grew a creature in a petri dish

Hi all! My sister has randomly remembered this book we read as kids (mid 90s) and it’s driving us mad! All we can remember is a kid made some kind of creature. We think in a Petri dish. Ring any bells for anyone!!
