Is it Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel ? There's a Gertrudis who's is a sister to the main character?

Am I dreaming, or is there a Jorge Amado novel with a Gertrude? He certainly liked brave, bold and fearless women - but I may be confusing myself. I will investigate...
No its much older than that. I'm sure I read it around 1988- 1994

That's about it really. I remember really enjoying it. Gertrude was brave bold fearless.. but who wrote it.
