Where to buy books online

I'm trying to cut down on the amount I use Amazon.

Does anyone have any suggestions of somewhere to buy books that makes suggestions for other similar books as well as Amazon does?

I read a wide range of books and enjoy clicking from one recommendation to the next to find books to read, since I don't get chance to wander around bookshops any more.

I buy from world of books, and would recommend them.
www.worldofbooks.com/en-gb?msclkid=b506034aaaa910d8382b5db1ed454304&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Brand%20-%20Desktop%20-%20Bing%20Only&utm_term=world%20of%20books&utm_content=Brand%20-%20Exact
They don't offer 'what to read next' recommendations like amazon, but if you google 'what to read after- book title-', lists will appear

That's really useful, thank you

Waterstones?

ABEBooks.co.uk for buying used books (no recommendations), but try Goodreads for recommendations

Thank you. I'll try both of those as well. You can never have too many books (or places to buy them from)

Fantastic fiction website is also good for ‘who writes like’ ideas.

Hive.co.uk think your local indy bookseller can get a cut of the price too.

I’ve had a few bargains from eBay recently searching Joblot or bundle. I’ve searched with names of authors I’ve liked such as kingsolver or Amy tan

Ok, there have been a couple of duds but it’s recycling and easy on my pocket - win !

I like Wordery - they have recommendations but I'm not sure how good they actually are.

World of Books and Amazon, if I had a local independent I would support them, especially now.

I used abebooks as well but someone on here told me they're owned by Amazon?

@Ticketyboop - do Amazon now own Book Depository?

Report
Ticketyboop · 01/07/2020 10:22

@FiveShelties, oh my - I have no idea. But I often find prices are cheaper on Book Depository compared to Amazon

I’ve ordered some r obscure( US)but popular books I’ve seen on Insta from Blackwells cheaper than Amazon. They had better stock too. Sometimes you get a lovely Blackwells bookmark. They take book tokens and seem really reliable. Came quicker than expected. I’ve ordered from them about 10 times now.

@Ticketyboop yes I have found that too. I used them a lot as they used to do (may still do) free shipping to NZ which made them much cheaper than Amazon.

biblio.com is good for secondhand books. You can limit search by country to cut down on postage.

My local bookshop has recently started selling online. They are a discount type shop so don’t have a huge range but they do get new stock quite regularly and the prices are generally very good. I’ve had lots of great fiction titles from here in the past. www.bookwiseonline.co.uk/

Don't be fooled by Waterstones, they are owned by a massive Private Equity group. It's no better than giving money to Amazon.

Use Amazon for recommendations then purchase via your local bookshop if you want to be more ethical.

Blackwell Bookshop are often the same price as Amazon.
