Fairy stories - recommendations please

Which books of traditional fairy stories have you enjoyed with your young kids? DS1 is just 4, so am looking for nothing too long or scary, preferably with good pictures. We have a couple of ladybirds which are OK but not very visually appealing...

if you can get your hands on any old ladybird books they have lovely pictures.

Ian Beck has illustrated some recently that were nice - ugly duckling I think - and there is pus in boots retold by philip pulman - that is good too.

I tend to take DS intot he bookshop when we go into town, its his treat fro behaving, or even just to the library, then any he loves can be bought, or just become boring without the cost!!
