Fantasy sci/fi series for dh

He had read a lot of fantasy and some sci fi but hasn't picked up a series for ages and I thought i'd get him a first book in a newish series for Christmas

He likes proper goblins and elves type stuff, all prachett, no gaiman (peasant), Asimov, Ian m banks. No game of thrones, no urban fantasy

Any ideas? Something new this year would be great as I know he won't have read it.

CJ Cherryh Foreigner series; Lois McMaster Bujold (anything); David Weber (space opera with naval flavour); David Eddings (easy reading); A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet series.

Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy, there are also another two books set later on and another on the way. Shadow March by the same author is also good, as are the Otherland books - an awesome mix of fantasy and sci-fi.

The Culture novels!! My favourites are Player of Games and Excession, you don't necessarily have to read them in order. Absolutely love them.

Not goblins and elves but I highly recommend janny wurts curse of the mistwraith series. Also Raymond first magician series. Shannara? First one very derivative of lord or the rings but they do actually get much better!

The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothsomething. Has a sequel but waiting for last part of the trilogy to come out.

Another saying Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. He's also started another series- stormlight (starting The Way of the King) which is immense.

I was just about to recommend the finovar trilogy. It depends on if he can handle stories that start in the real world. My dad (who brought me up on Eddings and Lord of the Rings) couldn't stand anything real world based.

So many of my favourites here (and some new ones to try). Can I add the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix and Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea trilogy.
