What horror do you recommend?

I always get the urge to read horror in October (despite not being a fan of Halloween). Found a list on Book Riot but it was Stephen King heavy - I do like Stephen King but it is usually what I end up reading when I fancy horror!! So looking for other suggestions.

New or old, all recommendations accepted!

I love the Victorian horror novelists like MR James and EF Benson.

I read EF Benson's The Room In the Tower one night before bed - couldn't sleep.

MR James Room 13 and Whistle and I'll Come to You - very similar.

I'm a bit of a Victorian freak - but even so - the room in the tower!

I like Victorian (they did seem to do spooky/horror well!)

Dracul by Dacre Stoker and JD Barker. A "prequel" (of sorts) to Dracula, written in the same sort of style but utterly brilliant!

The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp

Slade House by David Mitchell

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo - probably the best book I've read this year! But truly not for the faint-hearted, there are some very adult themes (unlike her previous YA works)

Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver. In fact, any of her books, though I like this one the best.

Dark Passage, Michelle Paver. Just enjoyed The Anomaly by Michael Rutger. I am reading Imaginary Friend by the author who wrote Perks of Being a Wallflower - really liking it but seems to be a bit marmite.

MR James is my all time fave along with Lovecraft. Agree with EF Benson. Algernon Blackwood has a good couple, The Willows and The Wendigo.

I prefer Joe Hill, Stephen King's son as an author. I loved Nos4au and Heart Shaped Box.

I could talk about horror forever, my favourite genre.

John Langan, The Fishermen. Heard good things about Nick Cutter's books. Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Really old book, but better version of The Stand is Swan Song by Robert McCammon. House of Leaves, but that is an involved read.

Reddit has the no sleep sub and if you sort by top all time has some amazing stories. I should stop talking now...
