Start using Mumsnet PremiumThe Good People by Hannah Kent
(8 Posts)Has anyone got a copy of this handy? I read it a while ago amd remember that in the acknowledgements section there was a book mentioned that explained what illnesses people thought to be changelings might have had. I didn't take note of it but now i really want to look it up.
Can anyone help??
I have it on Kindle - will see if I can find it for you ...
All it says is that a book called 'the good people, new fairylore essays', Peter narvez 1991 gives modern day consideration of the affliction.
Ace that's what i wanted, thank you so much!
It was congenital hypothyroidism I think?
Loved this book!
You should read Angela Bourke’s brilliant The Burning of Bridget Cleary — AB is an Irish folklore scholar, and brilliant on changeling lore. I’m not fond of Hannah Kent’s work. She’s done her Iceland book, her Irish book. Who knows where she’ll pillage next?
I shall look up Bourke. I admit I wasn't clear why Kent had written about Ireland but I did enjoy the book.
