50 Book Challenge 2019 Part One

Welcome to the first thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2019, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

I would like to join you. I don't think I will manage 50 (I would be pleased with 24) but have followed the thread on previous years and love reading all of the reviews.

2017 I read through my tbr bookcase, 66 books done and 0 bought.
2018 books only from the library/ second hand, 59 book done
2019 I'm aiming for more non fiction and to read books recommend to me

I'm in & am determined to stick to it this year.

I am intending to read a lot from my TBR pile on my kindle & make the effort to go back to using the library again. Our council closed 7 out of 24 libraries (& the mobile service) and my nearest library is now quite a schlep to get to but am determined to start using it again.

I'm in too, I entered last year on good reads and then couldn't be bothered updating when I read books. I'm on MN most days though so maybe more likely to.

Read my first book after midnight, Diary of a Fat Adorable Girl, which turned out to be really short but was a pretty good read and having lived on nerves and high metabolism, it was quite eye opening regarding the feelings of overweight people and how others can treat them.

Not really sure I should count it based on how short it was but it is definitely worth a read!

Currently reading Crazy Rich Asians, which I tried a few months ago and found too silly, now it is just the ticket. I have 4 library books to get through in the next few weeks and then I’m going to try and read what I’ve got hanging around on the shelf and Kindle and see how long I can go without buying new ones.

Happy New Year, 50 Bookers! I'm in again.

I've been aware of these threads for a few years. The first year, I lurked. The second, I fell off the thread part of the way through. The third year I managed to stick with it, and read 40-odd books. Finally, last year I hit 50. So I would very much encourage any lurkers/slower readers/previous non-completers to join and see where this year takes you. Last night I stayed up finishing:

1. Winter by Ali Smith Loosely a story of a dysfunctional family Christmas in Cornwall, although very much not a Christmassy book. The plot, as with Autumn is very much secondary to the various reflections on truth, mental illness, protest and politics in the UK today. Less poetic than Autumn, and oddly better for that IMO. Or maybe it's just that I'm getting used to the style. I think I've decided I like these, not having been fully convinced by Autumn, and will finish the quartet.

Signing in as I love these threads for ideas on what to read. Did 52 in 2017 but last year was pathetic and more slumping in front of Netflix. Want to get back to reading more.

I am in, and here to stay this year. I have been on for the last couple of years, but drop off when I get busy.

I read about 65 last year, a mix of Audible and Kindle (with a few non-fiction real books thrown in)

I have two on the go at the moment (about half way through each one so they will be my #1&2 of 2019 - Paper Aeroplanes by Dawn O'Porter and This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay

Kicking off with The Woman in the Window (half-price at Waterstones now). I'm just in the mood for a pacey thriller but don't expect it to live up to the hype.

I love the idea of this but when I get to bed I spend more time on MN on my kindle i stead of reading. Hopefully, I can stick to this resolution of reading more. I have joined a book club and have started Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman and am thoroughly enjoying it. I also received 3 or 4 books for Christmas and am looking forward to those. Oh, I also received the only connect quiz book and have just finished it so does that count?

I 'm currently reading A Book of Night Women by Marlon James which I started last night and Blink by Malcolm Gladwell which I've been reading very slowly over the last few weeks.

I would just like to add, this thread and the incredible contributions to it are entirely responsible for every book on my Goodreads 'want to read' list!!

Have been following for a few years and finally ready to join.

I read about 30 last year but definitely more towards the end of the year.

Currently reading This is Going Yo Hurt which I’m racing through, cannot believe how tough it is for junior docs.

Also have The Mars Room on the go for my book club, a little juvenile and crass for me but I’m only about 50 pages in.

I’ve been on the thread for the last 2 years, but also doing the popsugar reading challenge on goodreads where you have to read books that fill specific prompts. The first year was great and got me out of a rut, reading more widely and enjoying things I’d never have picked up otherwise. But this last time it just started to feel like work, having to read things I wasn’t overly interested in at the expense of something I’d rather read, and couldn’t take up some of the great recommendations on here as I was focusing on finishing the challenge. I could have just given up of course but couldn’t bring myself to.

So looking forward to choosing freely this year, though I’m looking at my kindle at the moment completely unsure what I’m in the mood for
