Off on holiday tomorrow (city break, plane journey and mostly bedtime or hanging at the apartment reading) and need to start my next book. Reverting to my kindle I have made a shortlist, what should I read?

A Little Life
Home Fire
Eleanor Oliphant
A House for Mr Biswas
Lady Macbeth of Minsk
Cloud street
Black and British (non-fic)

Therese Raquin, Emile Zola
So Much Life Left Over, Louis de Bernieres
Exit West, Mohsin Hamid

I struggled with A Little Life - just couldn't make myself care about the characters.

I really enjoyed my last three even though the characters were not people I really warmed too, but I am ok with that but I guess you do have to connect with them in some way even if it’s that you hate them.

I loved a Little Life and Eleanor oliphnt was ok (but I saw the twist coming). Home Fire and Mr Biswas are on my Kindle to read.

Drop everything and read The Song of Achilles. It is fabulous.

Argh now I am going to have to purchase The Song of Achilles.

Though it may require more sustained reading than this holiday might allow.

Eleanor Oliphant is OK. Can see the plot developments a mile off though. I enjoyed a little life but thought it needed better editing (got too repetitive in parts) and it was a misery fest (trauma on top of trauma).
Have you read Margaret Atwood's Hag-Seed? It's fantastic.

I really enjoyed Cloud Street.

I highly recommend The Carrero Series by L.T.Marshall, great holiday reads. They can be read as a whole series or as trilogies.

Thanks all. Adding to my list. I am in holiday now so am reading Eleanor Oliphant as it seemed the most straightforward to follow given I can only read on the journey and when we get back from sightseeing.

A House for Mr Biswas. It's been years but it is such a good, chunky, satisfying read, as I remember.

Funnily enough I finished Eleanor whilst away and am now reading Mr Biswas. Enjoying it.
