Any recommendations for 13 year old DD?

Can anyone recommend books for my 13 year old? She’s an avid reader and devours books. I got her a kindle a few years ago which has been a huge hit but am struggling to find material suitable for her age. She has been through the all usual mythology series and I have passed her a few of books recently which she has really enjoyed. All ideas gratefully received!

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is a very good YA novel. So is Wonder, by R.J. Palacio.

Michelle Magorian - Back home. An evacuee returning home after five years in the States. A lot of issues to consider - comparisons of life in the States and the UK during the war, relationships and how they change with time.

Does fantasy float her boat? Tamora Pierce, Trudi Canavan and Alan Garner are all worth a look.

Totally agree with baby, Back Home is a brilliant book. In a similar vein, Judith Kerr’s books about fleeing from Germany (When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is the first) would be a possibility. Maybe also try Joan Lingard (Across The Barricades etc., set in Belfast during the Troubles).

Like Grauch says, it depends what you regard as suitable. I’m enjoying the Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovich, which is slightly more grown-up and self-aware Harry Potter, but with a greater degree of effing and jeffing. I was reading The Crow Road and Tales of the City at that stage, but the amount of dope that is smoked in both of those would put me off giving them to a teenager today.

Catherine Jink's young adult series are great - I loved Evil Genius and its sequel.
Joanna Baker's Devastation Road is an oldish book now, but it's wonderful and she's written a couple of sequels to be published later this year.

Kerry Greenwood's Phyrne Fisher series are not YA, and they have some mild sex, but they're heaps of fun.

Diana Wynne-Jones. Howl's Moving Castle is terrific, but she also writes for slightly older readers.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman - you’ve reminded me of how impressed I was with my own 13 year old self when I was able to say, at a school entrance interview, that I was reading all of Georgette Heyer’s work. (I don’t think I mentioned the Chalet School. )

What else? Think that was the year I took to George Eliot - via Silas Marner. Rather wonderfully my mother remembered reading it at the same age.

Thomas Hardy also. That was probably through school - but I developed a deep love for him and read everything.

I admit to a simultaneous, brief but strong Mills & Boon habit ...

Did you only want fiction OP? I’ve found that aside from school reading the current teenager in the family is more easily coaxed into anything but fiction. Biographies, popular science, Malcolm Gladwell ...

I also started reading Georgette Heyer when I was 13.

But if she likes fantasy, I would recommend Tamora Pierce too. Presume that she has read Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy and Ruby in the Smoke etc.?

12 yo DD has just read The Book Jumper (Mechthild Gläser), translated from German, and declared it the best thing since Harry Potter.
Quite a recommendation!
It’s an age appropriate mystery novel with so a few nods to crushes and boy-girl interaction, but mostly a romp through well known scenes and characters of children’s fiction.

Look for reviews in the online magazine Books for Keeps. The Carnegie medal shortlist is always full of good stuff too. The Lies We Tell Ourselves from a couple of years ago was excellent, as was Salt to the Sea. Patrick Ness has some great stuff.

(It’s nothing like either of those in style but she’d recognise a theme.) Though you may consider Melvin Burgess generally unsuitable ...

My 12 year old reads a lot, but is currently absolutely loving rereading the whole lot of Adrian mole this summer. Not exactly what I thought I'd be allowing at that age, but I read it myself then too when it first came out and really enjoyed it.

Thanks so much all for your recommendations. She has read lots of the above including Hunger Games, Divergent, We Were Liars, lots of non-fiction and I’m finding it difficult to find material that isn’t too adult in theme. Some super suggestions here and plenty to keep her occupied! Thanks again.
