Following the death of Philip Roth I've seen lots of people saying how good his books are.
I've never read anything by him. For those who know his work, where should I start please?

Jessy 'Portnoy's Complaint' is quite famous as it's about a young man's dealing with his sexual desires and was considered quite raunchy at the time of publication. 'The Plot against America' is an 'alternative history' of America with Lindbergh as president and is quite a straight read. I think my favourites are 'The Human Stain' which deals with issues of race in America and 'American Pastoral' which is the first in a trilogy.

I'd say start with The Plot Against America-it's a great book. I always had the impression that his books would be difficult but they're really not.

I didn't know he'd died :( The Plot Against America is a great read - I read it a few years ago but would imagine it's even more interesting now considering some of the things going on with the current White House Administration.

I wouldn't start with Portnoy but it's worth reading as it's an American classic.
