What we're reading

I've fallen in love with CSI - any well written crime/mystery/thriller books?

I've never really read anything in this genre before, but I've fallen in love with CSI and was wondering what there is that's similar?

Have you tried 'Arthur and George' (Julian Barnes). Crime but with a twist.

For pathologist lit - Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. Kathy Reichs is the real deal - a Real Life forensic anthropologist.

Jeffery Deaver - Lincoln Rhyme books are great for the first few you read then get a bit samey. He wrote the Bone Collector which was made into a film.

PS second the Patricia Cornwell and James Patterson books. Although wasn't too keen on the last couple of Scarpetta books when she changed from first person to third (or was it the other way around?)

Ian Rankin is great - dark and gritty, complicated at times.
Ruth Rendell (Inspector Wexford) is great bathtime/holiday reading.
I also love Ed McBain books - he died a couple of years ago but wrote tons of detective novels set in a fictional US city that is clearly New York - great characters, often funny.

Michael Connelly (Harry Bosch series)
John Sandford (Lucas Davenport)
Robert Crais (Elvis Cole)
Dennis Lehane (Kenzie/Gennaro)
Lee Child (Jack Reacher)

All great authors and all have good cop or PI characters. Hope you find something you enjoy.

ooh I love James Patterson munz, I've just finished his newest one The 6th Target, thats a womens club one.
I'm just about to start Jack and Jill. I prefer his Alex Cross books, very dark.

if you try Ian Rankin get one from the library first as it is not to everyone's taste - I don't like him.

(I mean I don't like his books - I am sure he is a really nice man.)

Ian Rankin - I have the whole rebus collection

Can I also recommend Karin Slaughter. DH bought her first three books a couple of years ago and I was hooked

Not necessarily for the OP, but I'd like to recommend Graham Hurley for anyone who likes crime fiction (police based, in this case) and lives or has lived around the Portsmouth area. He creates a fantastic sense of place (and it makes me giggle when the experts are drafted in from somewhere terribly mundane I grew up near).

kathy reichs - the books are nothing like the TV programme, far better. Also Tess Gerritsen books are fab, as are James Patterson's Dr Alex Cross series

another here for James Patterson but do read them in order.

I am reading CROSS at the moment which is great.

The only downside is that with some of his books you do feel like he is bored with writing it and suddenly finishes which leaves you feeling disappointed!

i love them all. the films are crap though. morgan freeman was totally the wrong actor, they even say that cross looks like denzel washington...
