What we're reading

Is the answer a kindle?

I have so many books under my bed I want to read and keep reading reviews on more I'd read if only I had more time. The downside of no school runs anymore. I've stopped buying books mainly as I have so many waiting to be read and use the library occasionally but I keep forgetting about books that interest me. It just came to me, would a kindle solve all the issues? I haven't got one so no idea where to start. Hence the ridiculously long winded question Blush.

You need a routine, more than a kindle. If you find just ten minutes a day when you always pick your book up, then you will get back into it. You’ll buy more on kindle but not necessarily read them!

Good point! It would help with having just more and more stuff though.

I love my kindle. You don’t get books cluttering up the house and you can always download a sample (the first chapter or two) for free. If you go on holiday, there’s no worry about running out of reading material or taking half your luggage allowance as books.

Dh has just said I could have the kids as they don't use it so he's gone to look for it. wanted a shiny new one

You can try using the kids, and if you get on with it treat yourself to a shiny new one for Christmas. I agree about luggage allowance and books, somehow I seem to come back with more than I went with. Good job dh had his kindle on our last holiday as dd had read her books she took by day 2.

Currently can't find either of them. Will ask the dcs where they are.

DDs doesn't work and DS doesn't want to share so I'll look into getting my own.

It'll help, yes. I think one way to read more is to always have a book or eBook with you. Do you have a smartphone? If so you can download books on there and read that way for times when you don't have your physical book or Kindle with you.

I love mine, I don’t know if it’s the answer to your question but I’ve generally been able to read more since I’ve had it (at the same time I had my first child and reading time became limited) My to read list is still huge, but they don’t take up space. I still buy books, though less frequently, and use the library a lot. I often have a library book and a kindle book on the go, as I read the Kindle sitting up in the dark with kids, and it is easy to always have it on me for “dead” time. I read it when I’m cooking or waiting for things or if I can’t sleep and don’t want to wake dh.

Get a proper e-reader one with a light though rather than a tablet, they are much better for reading in daylight and for eye strain as well as being less distracting.

But yy to routine - just read! Prioritise it. I go through periods where I struggle with it and can’t find time, and the answer is always to realise how important it is and make time.

Get one with a built in light, great for night time reading and not disturbing anyone with a lamp. I love my kindle!

I do a combination of both. Kindle for longer books or a series where I'm likely to want all of them (Outlander/GoT) and for taking on holiday to save space. Paper books where I spot them in charity shops or can get them from the library (I always check before getting them on Kindle). I love my Kindle Fire as I can double up with it as a tablet, but I still use my small 1st gen one on my commute.

My kindle has revolutionised my reading habits...
Albeit I don't buy everything that interest me any more... I just stick it on my "wish list" and buy when I am ready to read it.
Saving me space and a fortune in the process!

I read a lot more since getting a kindle - I can keep it in my bag, so read when I get the odd ten minutes here and there waiting for the kids, queuing at the post office etc etc. I would never carry a big book around with me on the off chance that I would get the opportunity to read

They aren't that expensive either, and look out for Amazon offers. When they run Black Friday type promotions, kindles are often reduced

I love my kindle. My house used to be full of books, ones I'd not read and the favourites for re-reading. Now I've got the same thousands of books but all on the kindle. In an ideal world I'll have my own library room with sliding ladders and a day bed, but until I get the lottery win, the kindle is the way forward! Loads of free books for download are a huge bonus, have found heaps of new favourites through that.

I like being able to download samples to read, but then my samples become unwieldy and can take a long time to go through to find something I want! I also save books to Amazon shopping list, particularly if they are newly published and are likely to go down in price.

I prefer a kobo to a kindle mainly because my library membership includes e-books and has a fantastic catalogue. Saves me a fortunate. The software doesn't work with kindles, and the kobo is waterproof so i can read in the bath without fear

Just came along to vote for the Kobo...thought I was a lone voice, but cods is saying what I would have done. Look at the specs for both maybe? My experience is that you get a bit more for your dosh.

I love my Kindle but can't wean myself off the habit of charity shop books 3 for £1..... so I have a huge to-read list on my Kindle and two rooms full of unread books too! I regret nothing Grin

I use Goodreads to track the books that I want to read - helps me to keep track of recommendations that I get from friends or books that I see on here on in the paper.

I have the old Kindle Keyboard which I love, but also have a Kindle Fire which is a small tablet. The Fire can be used with Overdrive which lets you borrow ebooks from the library - excellent service. I do love paper books for sheer convenience and travelling the Kindles are fantastic.
