It's a bit different to some you've listed but Purple Hibiscus by chimande-adiche is stand out for me.

Sounds like we have very similar taste .. I’ve just finished The Ballroom by Anna Hope which I loved. Currently reading The Danish Girl but I’m not quite as enamoured by that.

You absolutely have to read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara if you like Donna Tartt.

It’s 700 pages but I honestly wished it was longer!!

I’ve just bought A Little Life, thanks for the recommendations.
I haven’t read it for years but it might be worth a few of you checking out What I Loved by Siri Hustvedt. I might re read it soon. The characters are brilliant and it’s a bit Donna Tart-esque.

Definitely the Poisonwood Bible if you haven't read it.

I've just finished the Muse by Jessie Burton which was great (and I much preferred it to her previous book, which I was slightly disappointed by).
Commonwealth, by Anne Patchett.
A Little Life, which someone recommend up thread, is a very good book, but incredibly harrowing. Not sure I could have coped with it with pregnancy hormones too (though I was on bedrest for a fair bit of pregnancy, so can definitely see the appeal of 700 pages!).
