Another 'do you know this book?' thread!

I've read a couple of books by this author and quite enjoyed them but I can't for the life of me remember the author or the name of the books. One of them was about a mother leaving a baby/child in the car at a petrol station then finding that the child had been taken when they got back. I seem to remember there was just a face on the front cover. The other one had an artist living in France who had a studio and liked to make sculptures out of clay.... So very random I'm afraid but that's all I can remember! I think the books this author writes are just one word titles? Hope someone can help!
