(20 Posts)I have just finished Thin Air & i loved it!
Think there was a ghost story thread somewhere.
Dark Matter by the same author?
I’m not a huge ghost story fan as I’m a big scaredy cat but I loved The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. It’s a historical peice split across Victorian and Tudor times. Beautifully written and a nicely done ending and genuinely spine tingly.
I was going to suggest Dark Matter, too. <goes off to search Thin Air>

Susan Hill wrote some great ghost stories, including the Woman in Black. (The original is NOT the same as the film).
I second The Woman in Black. Very good (unlike the film...)
The small hand - Susan Hill
The little stranger - Sarah Waters
M R James - Collected Ghost Stories
The Silent Companions, jeez WHAT. A read
Have just seen all these replies, thank you!
I have read Woman in Black & the other Susan Hill mentioned.
I have also read Dark Matter. Will have a look at the other suggestions
I found Thin Air so disappointing - it’s just Dark Matter rewritten slightly less well.
Heart shaped Box by Joe Hill is a good one
The turn Of The Screw by Henry James is one of the great classics.
Heart-Shaped Box was good! So was The Woman in Black.
Ghost story by peter straub
I loved Dark Matter so going to look up some of these!
How about The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley. Brilliant. Not a ghost story but definitely supernatural , English rural horror/gothic.
This House is Haunted by John Boyne is a good ‘old fashioned’ style ghost story.
A Good and Useful Hurt by Aric Davies (I think that's his name).
It's about a tattoo artist who starts to do memorial tattoos using a mixture of ink and ashes from the people who have died.
This gives a way to communicate with the dead people, but also puts the people at the tattoo studio in danger.
