I loved all her series of books - Flowers in the Attic series and the numerous other series that she wrote. I'd really like to find another series of books that are really gripping. VA books are my favourites! Please - if you can recommend any, i'd be very grateful! I like family sagas through the generations (obviously!), also like thrillers and a bit of romance/chick lit like Marian Keyes, Catherine Alliot etc.

p.s. I've read all VA books, looking for new authors :)

The Twilight books seem an obvious suggestion. Have you read them?

Promise I’m not vampire obsessed, but you may like the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles books too.

Thank you, i'm not into vampires/fantasy stuff, but i have to say i haven't given them a go to be fair. Will have a look though!

Last time I went looking for the vampire chronicle books I couldn't find half of them in print CAAKE. Wish I'd kept my books from a teen now. I loved the Mayfair Witches.

Not a series but family saga - have you read Middlesex op? I read Jennifer Worth's books of Call the Midwife fame before the tv show came out and enjoyed them for something different.

Dm would read some of Nadine Dorries sagas and likes them.

Then there's the obvious ones like dragon tattoo or YA such as Hunger games or Unwind.

Bryce Courtenay "Potato factory" series? I read them a very long time ago but loved them

How did you feel about the constant detail of sexual abuse, rape and incest in the Flowers in the Attic series? I read them as a teenager and found most of the stories rather abhorrent.

What is it you want to recreate? I can't think of any other author who could write about such horrific subjects in such graphic detail and get away with it.

Four fires by the same author is very good too Smile

Viviene I read VA as a teenager as well and loved all her books. But I think I wasn't mature enough and a lot of it went over my head. I wouldn't mind re-reading them but I think I'd regret it because it would spoil my memory of it.

Those books totally freaked me out as a teenager, but I loved them!

I wouldn't call the series a family chronical though... What about crime fiction? The Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwell have a similar 'surely something like this couldn't really happen' vibe.
